Delay in Reverse...

Does anyone have a delay when you put your X into reverse? This happens to me when the vehicle it hot, and takes anywhere from 2 -5 seconds to go into reverse. When the vehicle (tranny) is cold, it goes into reverse as soon as I hit the "R" on the column. I have had the tranny fluid changed (a complete change) at 33,000 miles with Mercon 5 and now have 57,000 miles. My extended warranty it up at 65,000 miles. It this something that I should be concerned with or is this normal? Oh yeah, it's a 2000 Sport (EB) 4x4 OHV with the 5 speed auto. Thanks!

I would take it in since you still have a warranty! If the fluid and filter is fresh, then I would say your trans is headed south.

Generally this is related to leakage or slow fill on the low/reverse servo. The fact it happens to you when hot and not cold suggests leakage. Sometimes replacing the servo O-rings seals, or going to an aftermarket dual lip seal will improve or solve it, sometimes not. This is something that can be done by dropping the pan, it's not a big deal. Sometimes an aftermarket replacement "Boost valve" can also help.
I bet 50% of all explorers exhibit some delay into reverse, it isn't unusual, but if it is under warranty let them look at it. I bet they try replacing the seals in the servo.

Worst case you could have a leaking internal seal (clutch piston most likely) somewhere else that is robbing you of fill capacity and that is why you have the delay.

it takes about 3 secs for mine to go right in but i just think its normal for the 55e tranny's.

An your tranny is a 4 speed, 4r55e is your trannys "name"....just some info...keep up the tranny fluid changes an you should be good.

Mine has always had about a 3 sec "delay" also... never any other problems out of it though. I just chalked it up to some normal wear and tear. I got the 5r55E in my 99 BTW.

Well, since my '00 also has the 2-3 second delay, I will chalk it up to "typical" 5r55E behavior. The tranny shifts and runs smooth, just wondering about the slight reverse delay. Thanks for all of the replies!
