Tranny Slips In Reverse

I have a 98 explorer XLT, 4 door, 2/4 wheel drive.

At first my tranny would slip when I put it in reverse now and again. On its own, the car would not shift into reverse, I would have to shift to other gears such as drive and park and then back to reverse in order to get it into reverse. As time has gone on, it happens more frequently, and I will have more trouble getting the car out of reverse. The car has not slipped in any other gears.

I was told once that I complete transmission fluid flush could alleviate if not completely get rid of my problem as my problem may not be a failing tranny, though I'm not sure. Is my tranny failing? If so, how long do I have left on it? I'd love to get through the summer on it, putting another 5k or so miles on it before I sell it off. If I can flush it out and fix the problem, then that would be great and I'd have no more problems.

Welcome to this forum! Did you check the fluid level? When was the last time the fluid & filter were replaced?

Aside from the obvious fluid level possibility, I would suspect that if its not the very common issue with the separator plate gasket blowout, its the orings on the reverse servo, the latter being the one I most likely suspect. Both can be done at the same time relatively cheaply. The stickies in the transmission section of this forum have all the info you need to do the job yourself.

If you do have to replace the O rings, get the Transtec viton D ring kit which is an upgrade from the standard O rings in the repair kits.

I haven't checked the fluids or anything yet, as soon as school is out I'm taking it to a transmission shop, but I've just been wondering if I'm look at a $2000 rebuild or something less.

I got the car around three months ago, and I had the tranny checked out immedietly, but the specialists told me one of the noises was a vibration involving the running boards. Sometimes at speeds under 40 mph there will be a high pitch whirring noise beneath me that stops when I put on the gas, I'm assuming that's what the mechanics heard because it happens much more often, but I'm sure they could be wrong or could just be bs'ing me in order to get me out of the shop.
