I have never set up a differential before, but have done a lot of research on line and I am going to give it a go. I understand the pre-load/crush bearing thing, but I am a little confused on the backlash setup. I understand that this is basically how close the gears are held together. What I don't know for sure is using the spacers for alignment. I saw a couple videos where the guy said if you are just replacing bearings, you would use the old factory shims or the same thickness of shims, which makes sense. So based on this, if I simply replace the bearings (assuming the new ones are the same dimensions as the old ones where) and use the same shim set up from the factory it should be pretty close to correct. I will check the mesh and backlash to verify of course, but it would seem logical that this would work.
