I'm about to do a full fluid change on my 99 Sport. How many quarts of gear oil will I need for both diffs? Also, how many quarts of Mercon will I need for transfer case? Thanks

From what I understand the 75w140 is what it came with from factory but if you change it out as routine maintenance 75w90 works fine

REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND TRANSFER CASE

D4=Limited Slip. It requires 75W140 Synthetic gear oil and 4 ounces of Ford XL-3 Friction Modifier Additive.

Some Synthetics claim you don't need the XL-3 but you DO need the 75W140 Synthetic for your Limited Slip diff.***The front diff calls for a different weight than the rear also.

TRANSFER CASE:
***Mercon III is the best fluid for your t case
Do NOT use mercon V
I do not run full synthetic atf in these cases, just Mercon III and change it yearly or bi yearly

***AND Best bet is Mercon LV (love). As Fourten mentioned, do NOT use Mercon V in transfer cases.

Either:
Plain Mercon (not V!!!). This is something you would buy in Walmart, it would say Merc/Dex compatible fluid. Least Expensive.

Mercon LV (Superceded by Ford from the original Mercon Recommendation. Currently Recommended by Ford for our transfer cases). Ford does not license plain Mercon anymore.

Valvoline Transfer Case Fluid (which is probably their Synthetic Trans fluid in a different bottle).

I think the 75w140 change was an attempt to alleviate a vibration/noise issue in the 8.8. That said, a lot of 8.8s left the factory with 75/90, or 80/90.

Just a spring house cleaning tip since I think you'll have to remove the read diff cover to drain your diff. assembly.

The rear ABS sensor lives top of your rear diff pumpkin - driver side.

It's essentially an electro magnet, and the tip will be covered with 22 years worth of bearing and gear metal particles/sludge.

Only one bolt holds the ABS sensor in - unscrew the hold down bolt and slightly rotate the ABS sensor L-R as you pull upwards.

When removed, clean off the tip, and then reinstall.
