hey guys,
new to the explorer forum as i own a mustang. This current car is a 4cylinder notchback. The idea in this project car is to find a complete 5.0 from a 96+ explorer that is obdII and distributorless. Whether i get a motor with P heads does not bother me. What concerns me is I saw a thread talking about a PATS system on some year explorers. There are several explorers with complete engines at my local pick n pull. Are there any years where the PCM will require a programmed key? Any way around it if so. I see guys doing gt500 and other 4.6 swaps into the fox bodies and dont see the PATS stuff getting in their way. I also intend on running a t5 behind it. Also which harnesses besides the main engine harness would be necessary to snag while i am there? I understand this will not be plug and play especially with the instrument cluster n what not, im not afraid of wiring splicing and such. I also intend to keep all the front accessories from the explorer as i hear they are set further back(than a mustang 5.0) allowing more clearance between the front of the motor and radiator. Then having custom PS and AC lines made. Your input is appreciated!

I own a 2003 Mustang Cobra and do love that car, I am a bit jealous of the new ones what with their iconic 5.0 badges and sequential blinkers anyway my input would be to just buy a Fox body with a factory 5.0 in it.
The DIS ? Fuhgetaboutit.

Always wanted a 5.0 Mustang growing up, by the time I could afford one the Terminator was in range so I went for something so sweet.

I put sequentials on my '95 SHO, it's possible... ;)

I'll ask around

I don't know much about the pony, but I am going to Chi town end of the month. I'll be running ams syn in my M5R1 , may run syns in front and rear. Not sure what brand, but will let you in on some mpgs, performance, temps etc; divizio:cool:

windsors03cobra, why would i want an e7 headed motor? for the price you cant beat an explorer motor with its heads and intake n such. but what turns me on is the ability to run a SCT X3, or just obdii in general as tuning would be easier. So WHY is DIS bad? I see coil packs as a more efficient ignition system than having a distributor.

the PATS system wasn't on the 96, I know that. I'm not sure which year it started but I don't think the 97's had it either. However, I have a 99 ranger that does have so at least by 99 all explorers had PATS..

'97 was the last year for an Ex without PATS.

On our Mustangs, we just bought a junkyard Ex motor, as new as we could find, and swapped needed parts on, but just ran distributors. Is there a particular reason you're needing to go DIS?

Hell- I even kept my Explorer motor'd Fox running speed density... :)

no NEED i guess, i like the idea though. being that i dont have a current 5.0, Im gonna have to do wiring harness swapping and such. I wanna do a turbo route down the road, and i believe the DIS would be a more efficient spark system compared to a distributor, esp in stock form. The amount of voltage produced by a coil pack is that of a regular coil, if not more. So running two coil packs with obdII tunability. Think about it, and anderson PMS is 969 or so, a SCT X3 is 379. Also i have no current front accessories so if i can get an explorer motor with all of em

It would be great to have the GT40 heads, it would also be great to start with a car with a V8 car which is superior from stem to stern than its 4 cylinder counterpart.

Lots of options for you that is whats great about Mustang.
And I will be upgrading to sequentials on my 03 this spring, got to atleast keep up with the late model V6 stockers. :salute:
