Here is my situation. I recently bought a used 99 explorer xlt 4 door 4x4 w' 5.0L. I plan on using it to tow my boat. My question is, how can I tell if it has the towing package? I looked in the manual, but it only says "never connect trailer wiring directly into the trucks tailight wires". Do the explorers come prewired for trailer lights? If not, then where can I get a wiring harness that doesn't connect into the trucks tailights? It seems that all the wiring kits in stores are the type that taps into the trucks tailights. Thanks in advance.

those ones that tap into the tailihgts are fine...... look in front of your a/c condenser. is there a radiator looking think on the left side?(right if facing the front) what gears? axle code? look under the rear bumper. is there a harness pinned to the inside of the bumper?

I have a 2000 and if you look under the rear driverside
bumper directly underneath the taillight you will see a female plug end that may have a red cover. This is your lighting setup, the male end with the trailer plug will be located in your jack compartment, otherwise you must order this piece. Or you dont have the towing
package :P

I found out that there is a female plug under the passenger tail light also. You can use either one.
