Ok so I just read in a post somewhere that if you step up the rear gears, you have to also change out the fronts for the TC to last, is this true?

Im going to put in 4.56 gears in the back to compensate for going to 33s. The gears in the rear now are 4.10s, do i also have to change the fronts and to what ratio then. In the reading from searches i have done, nobody mentioned having to do the fronts also, just looking for a straight answer. Thanks.

Yes, your front gears ALWAYS have to match the rear. Otherwise your transfer case is going to bind and explode. I know this from experience. Dont let anybody try and convince you otherwise thats what got me in trouble.

Well, then im thinking just out of laziness, ill just stick with the 4.10s with the limited slip. Im not a fan of doing gears, and im only going up to 33s. Whats your opinion, will the 4.10s suffice with the 33s? I saw on teh threads that i read that people were going from 3. something gears to 33s with 4.10s or the 4.56s. So I should be alright where im at now?

The only time you can get away with not doing the front diff as well is if you constantly run on a slippery surface (like ice) but even then it would do weird things to handling.

There are formulas for calculating the effective gear ratio when you upsize tires. I would guess that you'd be somewhere around 3.55 gears with 4.10 gears and 33" tires- guess a guess though.

more of a personal preference, really.
I wasn't happy with 4.10's and 33's, so I regeared a set of axles to 4.56.
plenty of other folks have been content with 4.10's and their 33's.

My 456's just came in today! coming from a 373 cant wait do not drive a dog anymore! sorry, just sharing the excitment youll have when you do the change

Ok, since I already ordered the 4.56s, I figure i might as well put them in. I searched, but i can't find the calculator of what gears i need to put in the front. The only thing i came across was someone putting 4.11s in the rear and the front, but that was on a third gen. So do i have to put 4.56s in the front also? Pretty much if someone could point me in the right direction on what to order from the front i would be greatly appreciative. Thanks guys, this forum rocks.

if you have gears in the back,
yes,, the front must match.

ok, i just want to be 100% clear, before i go and buy the front gears. By match, they have to be the same ratio as whats in the back, so 4.56 in the rear and in the front?

Yes you have to mat h front and rear same ratio. Front may be a 4:57 bit thats safe
