I have a 1996 ford Explorer Sport.
I think there is something wrong with my t-case.
The Selections on my dash are 2WD 4X4 High And 4X4 Low.
If i have the selector in 2wd and but the vehicle in gear and let it roll in the air (wheels not touching the ground). the front driveshaft spins. same thing if the vehicle is on the ground. I'm like 99% sure that the front driveshaft isnt supposed to turn in 2wd. but i keep seeing people say that the BW4405 is an AWD t-case.

I'm just a little confused. Not sure if i have to rebuild my transfer case. Tried Removing the 4wd motor and turning it to 2wd but it didnt do anything.

Any insight is greatly appreciated

The Gen2 doesn’t have locking front hubs, so that means the front driveshaft will always turn, even in 2wd.
If 4hi and 4lo work, you’re good!

Your 4.0 TC is a 4WD not a AWD.
If i am right, if you are in 2WD Mode the front axle is disangaged by the vacuum control system.

If you have no issues while driving, no 4x4 indicator lamps flashing while engaging 4x4high or 4x4low
or any DTC's i would not worry about it.
Maybe you should looking for TC fluid, any metal shavings or little plastik parts inside the old oil?

Okay so 96 2 door is it control trac awd? Does it say control trac on the back of the truck?
If so your t case is awd
You should also have a cad, center axle disconnect on the front differential, pass side there is a solenoid that locks and unlocks the passenger cv axle
This was 95/96 v6 only

Control trac the front d shaft will spin even with front tires in the air yes

You have a control trac transfer case which is basically full time awd and part time 4hi and 4 low

Might want to drain the fluid and replace it if it’s never been done
2.5 quarts if Mercon iii, regular atf
Good time to check for any nylon bits in the oil which would be a sign of a wearing out control trac case
