mynameisaric said:the above is what i've always heard. if you listen to rap/hip hop, the ported box is probly better. it gives you the bass waves coming off the back of the speaker as well as the front. i also heard its easy to screw up the proper port size too.
a sealed box is simpler and harder to screw up. LxWxH and you have your cubic space and just match that to subs specs, which you've done. my friend has l5's or l7's in a sealed box and they POUND! the sealed box is better for rock/techno where punchier bass is better.
either way, 2 L7's will give you a nice back massage while you drive down the road. i'm jealous. my 2 pioneer 12's in a sealed box are underpowered, and they wont ever match your kickers.
you said somethig about spending hundreds on a custom box? if you take the components off your current box(speaker terminals n such), have basic math skills (can calculate volume), and have access to a circular saw, jig saw, and a drill. you can build a box for less than 100$. the mdf will be your biggest expense. screw and caulk are dirt cheap.
yeah the guy I talked to at the install shop said it's going to sound great in the truck and actually said the sealed would be better for it being an SUV and that i'd only want to get a ported if I had a convertible or a much bigger sized SUV considering explorers are alot smaller SUVS than most out there (like Yukons, Tahoes, Suburbans, Expeditions, Escalades) etc.
I will def. post pictures after I get it all installed.
