Doing a 4x4 conversion.

So I found a guy on craigslist with a 97 explorer for parts..he said there is no 4x4 and thats its fulltime 4x4...correct me if I'm wrong but is he mistaken for awd? if there is a fulltime 4x4 explorer then thats cool..I need to buy the parts to do the 4x4 swap in my 4x2.

In 95-96 it was control trac 4x4. It is 2wd, 4auto, 4 low. The 4 auto will kick in and out of 4x4 as you need it and will get annoying off road. The 4 low on the other hand does lock in and work like any other 4 low.

97+ They went to 4 auto, 4 high, 4 low. They made the control trac position default and added actual 4 high.

The big difference is the front axle is vacuum actuated in the 95-96 and the 97+ is not.

So is the front axle not being vacuum actuated a good thing or better thing? Not trying to jack the thread but just curious if that was an improvement or something that just needs to be known for someone doing a swap?

In general, the vacuum system just makes things more complicated. So in other words, its just one more system that just needs to be looked after and sometimes causes headaches.
