I had the dash completely apart today to fix a stuck oil pressure needle. Since it was so much work, and I had it out anyway, I hopped in the cobra and ran down to Autozone, and picked up some LED 194's (given, they are the single led type) I put the LEDs in the back of the cluster (there was 6 of the main ones) and although I didnt get the dash back together tonight*, I plugged in the cluster and hit the lights, and they are NOT EVEN BRIGHT ENOUGH TO ILLUMINATE THE CLUSTER! I tried putting them in the overhead light to see if that worked, and although they let off a cool blue hue, they are VERY dim. Im going to return them tommorow and pick up some Super White 194's and put them in there. Thought I would share, so nobody makes the same mistake =)

*Talk about a *****, dont EVER try to get to the cluster unless its mandatory. I took everything apart yesterday and called it a night. (Radio console, bottom panel, dash trim, the whole thing) This morning, I took off the plastic cover over the cluster because I thought it was part of the whole assembly, and the two bottom torx screws are hard to get to, so I lost one of them pulling it out. Once I got the plastic off, I accidently broke the MPH resting pin off, so the speedo needle dropped straight down. Than, I try to pull the gear indicator out, and before I found the "easy to remove tabs" I broke off the connecting harness, and accidently take out the white connector that feeds the cable. I took me an hour to figure out how the white thing goes back into the gear indicator, and once I did, the gear indicator needle was off by a 1/2", so I try and stretch the spring a lil to make up the room, and the spring gets bent and is instantly useless. So now I have to go in to my house, try to find a replacement spring, and after an hour or so of using writing pen springs, I say screw it and run to Autozone (again) to get some throttle body return springs. They turn out to be too stiff, so I finally came up with an awesome idea to use a rubber band. It took me another half hour to find the right size, and I still had to cut it and tie it. So now I have that part fixed, but I still have a needle thats off on the indicator, so next I tie a knot in the cable to pull some slack, and than I realize there is an adjustment under the dash, so I adjust it, put it together, and now the knot catches and the needle hangs up when I try and shift, so I try to take the knot out again, and accidently rip it in half. So now Im pissed and figure I have to replace the whole part, so I go underneath the dash to unscrew where the adjuster is, and break the adjuster off on accident. So now I have a screw that is bolted in underneath the dash that I cannot get out (have you ever worked under the dash? Its like working in a coffin.) So by now its dark out, and I plug in the cluster just to see if the LED lights look cool at night, so I go to start the explorer, and the battery is dead.

I throw is a ****-fit right in the middle of the street.

I get the battery charger, try and plug it in, and the cord is about 30' too short to my garage, so I have to look for 30 minutes in the garage for 2 extension cords, finally find them, plug in the charger, charge for 15 minutes, start the truck, and the LEDs aren't even bright enough to light the cluster. I say screw this, I take out my key, unplug the charger, and call it a night.

Im going to run to Ford early in the morning and see if I cant get that cable. (its prob out of stock with my luck) and Im taking back the LED's and going to buy some super white 194's for the dash.

Anyways, had to vent, it was a long stupid day, and I cant wait to get my explorer back together and running again.

out
Joe

watch the super whites..... most of those get their brightness from pulling too many watts, which is usually fine, however around sensitive electronics might fry the crap out of them

cool thanks

wait, there is super white 194s small enough to fit behind a insturment cluster, right??

Dude! You've got to research these things before you start tearing your dash apart like that. I am a horrible mechanic. If someone says something is easy, it will take me 3X longer and many screwups.

However, I have taken my cluster out numerous times. I replaced my OEM black faced overlays with white ones from a '02 Sport. Also put in the red needles instead of the white ones. White faced gear indicator too. I spent countless hours on this site finding threads that pointed to each one of these tasks. Oh, I also read up on LEDs. Not many people had much good to say about them for dashlights unless you get those multiple LED versions that cost big bucks. I gave up on that project.

The search function is a very powerful tool. Just think of the aggravation you could have saved!

Best bet is to score a whole new cluster assembly on eBay. I've seen them for as low as $25 + shipping. Most will come with the gear indicator. Just salvage the parts you need off it and definitely follow some great threads on how to get your cluster out. The gear indicator is actually pretty easy. Just take your time. Too bad you didn't know about the adjuster. I originally checked into its location once when my indicator wasn't lining up properly. It can and does go out of adjustment from time to time which is why the adjuster knob is in there.

Good luck getting it all back together. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple. I've now taken them the cluster out a few times and don't even follow the instructions anymore. Yeah, some of those Torx heads are a ***** to get at. I took some out and left them out for good!

When they come up with a non-directional LED, you will be in business for dash lights. Otherwise, you are going to have to use the multi-led lights...

RE: led lights

Since we are on the topic of LED lights, I put LEDs all over my X, Window switches, center console, 4x4 swtich, AC controls etc. I'll have to take a pic and show everyone. The things about LEDs, as tawd77 said is that they are directional. But did you know they come in variouse vewing angles. The most common viewing angle which you can pick up at your local parts store is anywhere between 15-20 degrees. What this gives you is a narrow beam of light. The beam is no wider then one to two inches at its brightest piont. What you need to look for is WIDE ANGLE LEDs. These LEDs veiwing angle is 100-120 degrees. It gives of a very wide beam. It is not necessaraly brighter then the 15-20 degree bulbs, but it spreads the light out giving you the illusion that it is brighter. Anyways, I found this site, Called WWW.besthongkong.com They sell LEDS. Here is the best part. I ordered 150 LEDs, and 150 resistors, and 60 LED holders, all for $42.10 shipping included. DIRT CHEAP! I had to connect the resitors my self, but $42 for 150 lights who cares. The local walmart in Canada sells a 4 pack of LEDs for $9.99. I'll take some pics and post them later tonight.

I think the stock lamps are way too bright...

I never turn them more than halfway up. BTW, unless you used a medical-quality silicone rubber band, the heat from parking is gonna destroy that rubber band in about a year.

Where at on the site is the wide-angle 194s?

sorry there are no wide angel 194s. I bought a bunch of 5mm wide angle leds and put them in the 194 socket.

How did you do that? Did you just use the twist-in socket that comes stock on the back of the cluster? isn't it as easy as just pushing them into the socket? or is it more involved

thanks
joe

and also, how do the 5mm LEDs look behind the cluster? Are the gauges nice and bright? does it look cool, or do you have any pics?

I didnt take any pictures of the work in progress, but I will take some pictures of the dash tonight and post them.

Here is what I did to get the LED's in.

I removed the black thing that holds the original light bulbs from the cluster.
Removed the light bulb from the holder.
I took 2 Blue LEDS and a resistor and soldered them together.
I bent the leads (metal ends of the leds) in a U shape and soldered that.
The U shape is so that the LEDs will slide into the the black base.
I hot glued the leds into the black base so it wont move.
and put them back on to the cluster.

The cluster looks good, I need to put a few more LEDS to make it a little brighter.

100% right on. I looked here:

I actually did read this before I started, and it helped tremendously. I just did not pay attention to the little details...

studd469, I just ordered (6) super bright LEDs. They are wide-angle, and they actually have 5 LEDs on one bulb. AND they are 194! (superbrightleds.com) you think that these will be adequate for my gauges?

Blackout690, i think those lights will be bright enough.... thats a pretty good site I could of saved a ton of time if I had known about this site before I started.

How the heck do you post pictures on this thing?

hey i feel ur pain with this one as i to did mess up the whole cluster but i did what celly said to do and buy a new one on ebay.. it cost me 45 with shippin and i got the whole white face gauge and everything..
but i really just wanted to say that i really enjoyed ur post it made me laugh
so good luck to u
