For very many cases the issue is that the switches in the doors and latches which indicate that the door is open get stuck. A light spray of WD-40 often fixes the issue. Here is a thread on this, there are many others like it:

WD-40 fixed this issue in my Explorer - I sprayed it in all 4 door latches and on the two rear latches.

Sometimes this will not fix the issue. The next most common reason is that the wires in the door are broken - a more involved fix than the WD-40. The lazy person would start with the WD-40 before trying to find broken wires.

I've had the exact same issue since last November. I've done the WD-40 trick with no luck. I assumed it was the rear hatch that was giving the door ajar signal because my rear wiper stopped working simultaneously, but I have no clue how to check the wiring back there or anywhere else.

This problem is seriously driving me nuts.

Hey everyone im new to the forums. I do know wats wrong with your door ajar light. if your like me, and cant use the lock and unlock either or the window tilt switch, i think it has something to do with the wires in the harness. Maybe one is cut, or the ground wire is messed up because it happened to me and when i pushed on the harness, it would work. Just a thought....

This morning I think I narrowed down the problem to my rear hatch because it is the only door that doesn't trigger the dome lights to come on. Any advice?
