Door lock issue

I had this similar problem on my '99 sport. I dealt with it for quite some time.. Unlocking the passenger side door than then reaching through to pull the driver's side door handle - that got old real fast.

Sometimes it would unlock sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes I would unlock the back glass and hit the unlock button until it would pop open. Very very frustrating.

So one day I was messing around with some things (I'm about to use non-technical words because I don't know what these parts are called) and for some unknown reason I'm looking at the side of the door where the latches are for the door jamb. So as I look at it I'm hitting the unlock button at the same time and I see this lever bouncing up and down right inside of those latches. So I get some spray grease and shoot some down in there. And all of a sudden my lock works. I don't know what the hell was there and how grease fixed it but it did. And it has been working for the past 3 months.

Hopefully this helps somebody!

You guys are the best. I was able to put a new hook in the end of the spring and re-attach it. I would have never figured out how to do it without the pictures and descriptions in this forum.

Just a note about lubing the key locks. I always use the remote and one day the battery was dead so I needed to use the key. Well, the lock was tight so I used a little force and I heard a crunching sound and broke the driver side key lock and had to have it replaced. Now, I work the key lock once a month and if it seems like it sticks a little I then put 2 drops of oil on the key and insert it in the lock and lock and unlock about 10 times. Don't forget the tail lock since alot of road dirt accumulates in it.

That broken spring in the latch is the culprit, but you can bypass it's function without replacing the door latch. After removing your door panel, look up at the rod that is connected to the back side of the door handle. I removed the window channel to get a better view of all of this--it's only held in by one bolt attached to the lower door frame. The bottom of this rod has threads on it, and threads into a yellow plastic block. Lift up on this rod, and while keeping it held in the up position, try your door lock switch and see if it unlocks. If it works, now you know what you have to do. That rod has to stay in the "up" position at all times in order to unlock the door. Find a small spring and attach it to the bottom threaded part(where yellow block is) of the rod, then to some other object above it which will keep this rod constantly pushed upward. I actually fished out the broken spring from the latch mechanism and bent a new "J" on the end that had broken. I attached one end just behind that yellow block and the other end to a small hole that was in the corner of the back side of the latch housing. Total cost of parts: $0.00 :D
Been working great for the past five months.

I had the same issue... I just hooked the spring onto the lower threaded area of the rod and into a hole in the latch housing. Works great. Also, for the frozen locks: I used Household Oil in each and let it soak, that loosened them up just fine. Household oil is your friend!

"If it moves and shouldn't, use duct-tape. If it doesn't move and should, use WD-40."

Thanks Navajotfw, a quick spray of WD-40 and my driver door lock works again. Oddly, it still doesn't work with the key, but the power locks/keyfob will now unlock it.

I have a problem kinda like this... but a little different... My key does not unlock the door at all. I have to open the back hatch and hit the unlock button several times before the driver door opens. I remember when I was up at school, I couldnt get it to lock, so i took tin-snips to one of the metal rods (that was jamming) linking the solinoid to the lock pin (at top of door panel) just so that it would lock, and that actually did the trick... but did no help getting into the truck haha. I was thinking of adding the keyless entry when I go to fix this up. Anyone ever add the keyless entry to their truck that didnt have it before??

Knowing that its such a hard space to work in, I am compelled to just buy a whole new door with the keypad on it. I currently do not have the keyless entry, nor do i even have a remote. Any suggestions? I always loved the keypad idea, and I'd like to make that work. Let me know. Thanks!

got a "non oem" system from walmart ($40). Less than 20 minutes to install... just tap into the wires going the appropriate relays in the cargo. Easy and been working fine for 3+years on my "didn't have keyless" 96 ex.

Budwich, What system did you pick up at walmart? A remote, or keypad??

just the remote (and box). it was by bulldog security.

is thier pictures on taking drivers side door panel off, thanks john

im having a slightly different problem..
i have full use of my key...but if i try and use anything electrical (lock button or key less entry)....i can only lock the door but not unlock...its like something in there is sticky or stiff

its only the drivers door

....it was the solenoid

door lock problem

Hey guys,
A newbie here. I'm having the same problem on my 99'. I'm wondering if I get it to stay in the unlock position, and then diconnect the actuator wires- would this keep it from locking? I did take out the fuse(#18) so that the power locks wouldn't work, which worked great, except it also diables the power seat. (wouldn't care about that, but my daughter also drives it and needs to adjust it)

thanks

i had the same problem with mine. there is a small spring inside the latch that breaks. the dealer had a new one for about $50 so i just replaced it. haven't had a problem with it since.
