Hi Guys,

I have been having continuous issues with my 2002 xlt v6 explorer..

I have so far changed all sparks with leads, fuel filter, cleaned TB, MAF Sensor, and EGR Valve.

Tested the EGR Valve by sucking onto it, which stalled the engine everytime I sucked.

The only thing left is either the DPFE Sensor or CAT...

The problem is when reversing it miss fires, and when also in open throttle especially up a hill it kind of looses engine power and stumbles unless I give it more petrol which gets her going...

Should I replace the DPFE Sensor as I heard it is a common issue in these makes?

Or clean the Cat with Sea Foam, and what is the best way to clean Cat without removing it?

Any help would be much appreciated....

Sea foam will not clean your cat.
If the engine light is on, what are the trouble codes? This will give you an idea on where to look for issues and replace parts accordingly. Throwing parts at it without knowing the codes is a total waste of money. Both DPFE sensor and a bad cat will throw a code.

Thx mate',
Unfortunately, I am unable to retrieve any codes using my scanner for the reason being that whenever I try to scan the dots, the scanner turns off, but I am able to scan live data and the problems, showing (cat, Maf, evp)

I have replaced the dpfe sensor as it is common for it to go faulty, and just noticed that if I turn the AC on the car kind of looses power especially when giving it petrol on a highway, it hesitates badly, but when AC is off it goes good unless on open throttle.

In addition to a very bad smell coming from the exhaust after a trip on the highway.

Your help would be much appreciated.

That bad rotten egg smell is your cats going bad. Hollow out (if legal in your state) or replace them.

I'd consider the problem to be an o2 sensor, but it is impossible to tell without the p-codes. if you've had a flashing check engine light, and driven it that way, you're looking at replacing the catalytic converter for sure, but that's treating symptoms, not the cause. My DPFE sensor threw an EGR code, and it was a misfire. another off the topic deal which is worth bringing up was that what I for quite awhile was a misfire, was actually a bad wheel speed sensor making the computer think the vehicle was spinning its wheels, whenever leaving a stoplight, so it was going in and out of 4x4. found it was a front wheel bearing a year or so after that started, when the anti skid light finally illuminated. New wheel bearing, no more 'fake' misfire feeling. This could also be isolated by selecting 4x4 when at a stop sign and seeing if the misfire feeling goes away!

Never had and CEL flashing at all...
Could it be a failed Fuel Pump?

Geez, I wish I had a clue as to what unable to scan the dots - means. Anyhow, obviously, your OBD2 connector is working, if you can do live scan. Does it run OK immediately upon starting a cold engine? if it's only when the engine is warmed up, there's a world of difference in how troubleshooting is performed, as the emissions control system operates differently in closed loop - cold engine mode. I'd start there. is the eng @operating temp when it turns into a bad actor? (I don't believe it's a low fuel pressure problem, but it wouldn't hurt to pressure test the pump, at least you'd know where you stand, there! Good luck! Keep posting...

Thanks mate,
In regards to when the issue occurs, mainly, in reverse weighed cold or warm, mostly in open throttle. And also only when warm when you first accelerate it kind of start jerking off, however all of the above is without the ac being on. If ac is on its a totally different experience, it gives me.hell to go from one gear to another wig it floored and.jerking.like no return.

I hope this will help in identifying.the root cause of the issue to fix.

Thank you all for your help
