driver information center errors 2001 Eddie Bauer 5.0

I replaced the fuel filter and now the info center overestimates my fuel usage. Typical fill up is about 16 gallons and info center thinks I have used 19.5. Shop manual says fuel usage is from the PCM. How is that done?

Should I reset everything by taking off the battery?

Welcome. There is one wire that goes from the PCM to the message center for fuel consumption.

The PCM monitors the injector functions and with some internal algorithm, it creates that output circuit, which goes to the message center. It is not adjustable as far as I know. All Ford fuel usage displays are overly optimistic. Most people believe those gas mileage figures, and thus they think they get better consumption than they do. They seem to be a good 10% over actual fuel usage. Check that manually, with a record of fill ups. That is the only way to check it accurately.

OK, I noted that fuel in fuel filter was quite dirty. Maybe less resistance is throwing it off. I check real mileage at 17-18, but message center is showing 13. I think I'll pull the battery ground and let it relearn things.

If it says 13MPG and you calculated 17-18, something is wrong with the message center. Typically for 17-18MPG actual, the MC would display something around 19MPG, or slightly more even.

Call me crazy. but i mostly just use how many gallons are left. I never use the mpg section unless im on long highway drives. and even then. I cross reference with my odometer. Its mostly good for how much fuel you have left and for me its generally spot on the mark. It is nice when it works. Wont lie.

I think I may have fuel pressure measured as well

I measured the fuel pressure this weekend and highest value I got was 37 psi my understanding is it should be > 60 psi whether the engine is runing or not.

The 1999+ Fords should run about 55-62psi, and 55 is getting low.

In my 99 from when I got it, a lean code popped up every few months. I had 55psi or so when I first checked it, and that was while off or running. It's fairly constant with the 99+ cars. Later when I started to feel a lack of power at higher rpm's, the code came more often. I finally caught it one time at 52psi, and then I pulled the tank to change the pump. I changed the pump, but I also saw a crack/split in the rubber hose at the fuel pump. It had been losing some fuel through the hose, and finally got the pressure low enough to force pulling the tank.

Yes I have been popping P0171/ P0174 lean codes occasionally. I think the clogged fuel filter may have done in the pump. That's why I have been looking in this area. I ordered a Delphi fuel pump from rock auto. lets see if it clears up the problems.
