Driver side dash noise tied to speedometer.

I have a 2019 ExplorerXLT 57K miles that started makeing a noise in the dash near the speedometer that’s starts around 40mph. It sounds like an old worn speedometer cable. I’m not sure the car has a old school speedometer cable. the noise is not a blend door actuator click or the inside cabin temp sensor. It’s tied to vehicle speed and not wind related. Starts at 40 and becomes minimal at 80+ MPH, but still present just a higher frequency sound.

I have a 2018 and it's started doing the same thing. Definitely not wind related. Starts @ 40 mph. Did you ever get an answer to this issue?

Welcome to the Forum.
The main cause of these noises is either the cowl or 'A' pillar. How did you eliminate the wind as a possible cause?

I first heard it a couple weeks ago but it only made the sound a couple minutes, was intermittent then stopped. Not sure if you are old enough to remember a cassette tape player or not but it almost sounds like an old cassette player rewinding or fast forwarding at a high speed. It only starts at 40+ MPH. You can pretty much pinpoint it coming from the speedometer because it is quite loud. It sounds like a beehive and the frequency/pitch gets higher the faster you go. I have some wind noise issues from the outside of the vehicle and that's not what's going on. As soon as the speed drops to 40 or below it stops.

I had an 8 track player in the 79 Olds I had. I graduated from High School in 1965. I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. Does that answer the age question?
I believe the 'beehive' noise was used once by a member for the noise a loose cowl would make.

My guess is that the stepper motor that drives the needle is going bad.

I will take a look at that to see if that's whats happening. Thank you and I loved the age references. LOL. You never know these days who's answering you so you don't know exactly what examples to use!
