I need to remove my 21 gal gastank for my t-case swap. if you have dropped your gas tank, I would love to hear about it, what probelsm you encountered, tips, etc.

Just remove the straps that hold the gas tank up. Also make sure it's empty or close to it. It only takes about 15 minutes, it's not anything to worry about.

Skidplate comes off first, if you have one. Use a floorjack with a ~2' piece of 2x6 on it to support the tank as you lower it. Watch the gas lines and wiring as it comes down.

I have dropped mine on the ranger. I siphoned out most of the gas and removed the skid plate. I then set a floor jack under it with a wide board on it (didn't want to dent or puncture it) and unbolted the straps. Nothign to it. Just reverse to put it back.

remove skid plate, support tank, remove straps.
ONce its down a little disco the filler neck, lines, and wiring.

Its not that bad, first time might take a couple hours total.

Why do you need to drop the gas tank to swap t-cases? I went from a 4405 to 1354 and this wasn't necessary.

haha i feel ya. last night my driver side leaf springs spreaded like a fan and stabbed my gas tank, now i have this hole.... hey 410, do u kno how hard it'd be to upgrade to a broncoII gas tank and mount it in the middle? mounting it wouldnt be hard, but what about the fuel pump and guage and stuff?

the big problem is the height of the BII tank and the Explorer floor, also there is a crossmember that picks up your spare tire AND the shocks a totally different.

So yeah its a little bit of work But the BII tank is 23 gallons, has a semi beefy skid plate (I have performed rock and concrete modifications to my 17 yer old unit, its not shaped the same but there is still room for more denting before I hit the tank), its metal, and will accept a en Explorer fuel pump (BII uses dual pumps until 89, then single like an Explorer).

It has been done, Rangers are easier, body lift helps, might be worth a look if you want more weight in the back, more capacity, etc...

Thanks for all the advice guys!! However the project will have to wait, as I just took a 2 week, 12 hour/day job working on a movie shooting in Boston as "Vehicle Coordinator." Something has to pay for the mods!

I have a 4404 AWD t-case, and am swapping in a 4406 t-case from an Expedition. It's much, much larger than the explorer cases.

If you really want an easy job. Extend your hose that goes into the fuel filter to a 5 gallon can when you're almost out of gas. Jump the relay and turn the pump on. drain your tank completly and it weighs next to nothing and is 50 times easier to move around without gas shloshing around.

I do this when ever I have to pull any tank...
