'99 Explorer XLT
I know that there are a few threads on this already. I did look into a number of those threads. I've got a 99 Explorer XLT 5.0L V8 that i'd like to get dual exhaust installed, in the future. I don't see many 2nd generation explorers/mountaineers with dual exhaust. I want it for the look, sound, performance. This being the 2nd vehicle I have ever owned I'm not to well versed with cats and all the electronics. I had duals put on a 73 Ford Maverick That was very simple and easy. I guess the things I need are opinions and information regarding the routing of the pipes to exit out the back? getting rid of the cats or leaving them? and anything else you can think of. If getting rid of the cats is the thing to do, I don't know if the exhaust shop will do it because of legality reasons. Also, what do you think I'm looking at cost wise, I don't want to spend a fortune. On the Maverick I had duals put on it last year, I believe the cost was $225 + Mufflers.

Well just look underneath your ride and see. It has dual exhaust all the way into the muffler. Now what you could do is have some bends made at the rear end and go out to have that dual exhaust look. I think this is from Xan's old mounty

Here is a lil cross-over tube I had put on, but didnt make a huge difference.

And here is my first setup with dual flows

yeah ruby had dual on his mounty and it sounded bad ass i really liked the sound a lot.

if you have the V8 you shouldn't have any problems running the duals. a lot of people have cut out the rear cats so that shouldn't be a problem as well. the only thing that may cost you would be your choice of muffler. two single ins or one dual in/dual out and then if you want the pipes run the whole way out who's going to bend your pipes. that will be your biggest expense. there are a lot of threads on choice of mufflers in this section for 5.0s

So good luck and keep us posted.

You may have a problem going around the spare tire if you keep it under the truck. I took mine out of my 96 V8 and ran 2 1/2" duals all the way back.

My girlfriends Mounty V8 has 2 1/2" pipes to dual in-out Flowmaster 40, 2 1/4" pipes around the spare, to 3 1/2" tips. I think we are cutting off the rear cats soon to have a louder more raw sound. Sounds great though!

If you want look, sound, and performance, skip the custom route and find a 3" Mac catback. I prefer the look of a single exhaust( or single with dual tips)- I guess I dont get the "performance" vibe from duals because so many trucks around my area have them. Like if I see a LSx Silverado with duals out the back, I just think "hey, there's just another truck with duals" or "that truck sounds like crap". But if I see a Corsa sticking out the rear, it makes me wonder what all they have done to the truck.

I got single in and dual out 40 series flowmasters and they are 2 1/2 inch tips and they still got the spare tire.

But eventually i wanna get true dual

Update:
I called the nearest shops to me. I believe I called around 5. Three said they wouldn't / couldn't run duals on a Explorer. One told me it would run $500-600. The one that did my other car said they could probably do it and it would run $280 with Dynomax Turbo Mufflers. $325 with Flowmaster Mufflers. $180 with no mufflers. So, I guess I"ll take it down there soon so they can put it up on their lift and tell me if they can do it or not. I want it run straight out the back with flared tips. They told me on a 5.0L V8 the size to run is 2.25. They said larger than that and it won't have enough back pressure. I want this done right the first time. Do I need to get them or someone to move the fuel line and a couple hoses on the left side near where the pipe will run? I heard something about the heat hurts those lines/hoses? The shop also said Cat-back. They said maybe true duals but most likely would have to be cat-back. I also want a deep rumble sound alot of trucks around here with duals have, I don't know what kind of sound Dynomax Turbos have? Let me know about all of this. I know it's a long post, but I have alot of stuff to cover. Thanks

my friend wanted to put duals on his explorer and they told him he couldnt. They said there wasnt any room and plus his spare tire would of been in the way.

i got duals on mine i was lucky and i still got the spare tire underneth my x.

Avoid the Dynomax Super Turbos, you likely won't be happy with the sound, I was at first, but then hated it.

The muffler just sounds kinda buzzy? I think is the word. Theres a few soundclips on youtube of the super turbo. It also had some drone in the cab that got annoying after awhile. Look at the Ultraflow for a good sounding muffler. Plus they have a dual inlet/ dual outlet that features a built in X-pipe.

i had the dynomax cat back exhaust on my mountaineer before i went to flowmaster. it hd a nice sound but it wasnt very loud and it doesnt have much of a rumble at all. u should go with flowmaster or atleast a chambered muffler cuz the packed ones dont give u a rumble in m opinion.

I have a 01 with dual exhaust that sounds really nice with just some small glass backs I will get some pics up tomorrow with a short video on how it sounds.

i got the mac single and i love it but if those r ur options for duals id go with the flowmaster. they are definately worth the extra money. its like they say... "you get what you pay for" ^_^ honestly tho the mac single out 3" catback sounds like an f250 with duals. nice low rumble; loud but smooth and clean

Update:

I stopped at the exhaust shop the other day. They said they could do a single in dual out muffler. Which is not true dual exhaust. Just one muffler with 2 pipes coming out of it. I don't see what I would be gaining, they said it would be $300 to do that. I don't think it's worth it for not being true dual exhaust. Why can't anyone put true duals on an Explorer. I guess im SOL.

it gets tricky and muffler shops get lazy, its too bad you dont have a buddy with a welder, keep looking around town for a shop that will "Look the other way" when chopping into the cats. there should be a mom and pop shop that will do it for the right price, good luck

the muffler u need if u do choose the single muffler is dual in dual out not single in.
