OK, I need to know the final verdict on this one: Does anybody make a replacement performance exhaust for a 98 SPORT 4.0 SOHC with the dual inlet, single outlet muffler?

Just do a custom set up. I have a 99 sport with the dual in and single out. I bought a Flowmaster super 40 and took it to meineke and they just made a "y" pipe for the dual in and I wanted dual out so they made another "y" pipe for that because the muffler I bought was single in and single out. So it can be done. Mine was done for 280

The Flowmaster 50 Series has one...# 524553.

I have said SUV 50 on my Ex.
Dual in single out.
Real nice tone.
A bit loud inside at about 2,000-2,700 RPMs though.

OH this will come in handy when its time to do my 5.0L Exhaust :)

Not for the 2 door.

So, it looks like the answer is "no".... [bad English accent on] mufflers alone doth not an exhaust system make.[/accent]

It's not worth it to me to spend significantly more on a custom performance system than the OEM replacement when the custom kit will drone almost as loud as the rotted-out OEM one I've got on there now. Looks like I'm going with OEM replacements for lack of any better options.

Hua?
You can buy quiet mufflers or loud mufflers,
dual in and single out, just like you wanted, doesnt matter if its a 2 door, we are not talking cat back bolt on kits here, we are talking replacement mufflers

gijoecam I just went thru this with my 99 Sport. No .. nobody makes a performance exhaust. Stay away from Gibson ... I learned the hard way. I ordered their sideswept which was made for 97-00 2 dr explorers. It ended up being a one in one out muffler. After talking with Gibson they recommended I have a custom Y pipe made. Also if you return the system there is a 20% restocking fee on top of the shipping. The cost of the Gibson would be $372. The installation fee would be $80. The custom Y pipe (SS) would be $100 ... total would be $552.
I went to a custom exhaust shop and a DUAL T304 SS (catback) exhaust installed ..... $500.00 .

We're not talking kits, but we're supposed to be:

I'm looking for an exhaust kit, not a muffler. (although it looks like I may end up with just a muffler unless I can find some better prices)

Icepounder, did the tailpipe work on that kit? The exhaust shop I stopped at yesterday told me that the difference in the kit between the 2-door and 4-door is the length of the inlet pipes on the muffler. If I could get the muffler from the 4-door and the correct pipe for the 2-door, they could modify and install the muffler and pipe for $80. Heck, for that matter, I could install the pipe.... I just need them to get the muffler on the existing tubes with the outlet in the right spot.

I'm aware that the 4 dr muffler looks to be correct. When I contacted Gibson (I spoke with Greg Gibson) and explained I wanted to swap mufflers in order to make the system work he explained they would not exchange the 1 in/1 out muffler for the other. I would have to purchase the other muffler and they would not guarantee everything would work. He then said to go to a "quality" muffler shop and have a custom Y pipe made. Also if I return it I'm out shipping and a 20 % restocking fee. I guess they figure they have you  .
To me it was the principle of the whole thing. I returned their system and took the loss. As I stated earlier I'm now getting a "true" SS T304 dual exhaust for about $50.00 less than it would have cost for the Gibson single. This is just my experience in the past week or so. You can call them but you'll get the same answer.

as you know nobody makes a kit for the 2 door. You will end up spending alot more if you get a kit and modify it to fit then you would if you just have a local shop bend it up for you. I have never paid more then $300 for a complete cat back exhaust system built to my specs, they supply the muffler.

410Fortune hit the nail on the head. My new exhaust is a true dual exhaust made entirely of T304 SS ... the same as the kits. I went with the 2 1/4" pipe because the 2 1/2" would have been overkill for a dual exhaust (IMHO). It's being ran to my specs and I chose to have both pipes exit out the right rear for performance gain. I should have her back in about two hours.
Good luck with whatever you decide. :D

I forgot to mention the Gibson muffler you would want is the flange/slip joint dual inlet single outlet !

Yeah, see, that's my problem from both ends.... First is that nobody makes a kit to do the whole thing. Second is that I have yet to find any good shops that will tell me, "get this and we'll make it work." I also don;t want a custom-bent dual either as most of what I've read on here leads me to believe there's a loss of performance with the duals.

This is ridiculous.... I'm gonna end up replacing it with stock parts.

Joe IM O you are being rediculous.
Any exhaust shop will be able to set up an exhaust to your psecifications.
Tell then what you want, how much you want to spend, and have it done.

All you need is a dual inlet, single outlet muffler of your choice, tell them where you want it put and how you want the pipe run and what size. Dont spend more then $300.

Nobody makes a bolt up kit for the Sport or the BII, or many of the Rangers, because there simply is not enough market for them and ALSO because anybody looking for a perfromance exhaust will usually skip the bolt up kits anyways and just go down to their local exhaust shop, its a hell of a lot cheaper, no shipping, and instead of bolted together pieces with clamps and short sections of pipe, you can get a fully welded setup designed to your criteria.

I have had 4 different setups on my BII in the last 8 years, and I am getting ready for a 5th, I keep swapping engines and transmissions, thats my problem, but I have never paid more then $300 for a complete cat back setup.

I don't think I'm being ridiculous, I'm just frustrating myself looking for something that doesn't exist, that's all.

I have yet to find any good shops in my area. None of them have quoted me a decent price for OEM replacements, and none of them can tell me anyone that does good custom work. It's tough to get a custom setup done when you don't know what you want. What I want and what will work best for my vehicle could be two different things, and I don't have the time or the money to invest in changing it over and over again if I don't like how my guesses turn out. With the kits (like Borla, Gibson, etc) someone else does the research for me, and it's worth it for me to pay someone else to do it. Unfortunately, this is the first vehicle I've ever owned that such a kit was not available.

I just got a couple of leads on some good custom installers. They're an hour away from me, but it looks like that's what I'll have to do.

As for nobody making a kit for the sport, Gibson makes kits for all of the Explorer, Sport, and Sport Trac engine combinations EXCEPT mine, and I can understand that.... They only used my setup for a 2 or 3 year period and dumped it. Unfortunately my truck falls into that crack in the coverage. That's why I'm here trying to find alternatives that don't involve a custom shop and the trial and error method. (and therein is my pipe dream LOL!)

Either way, she's getting a new system of some sort this week. I can't take the droning anymore!!!

Thanks for the help gang!

-Joe

UNderstood, you should try building a Bronco II if you think your truck fell through the aftermarket cracks.

YOu guys back east seem to have a lack of good performance shops of any sort, California is so flooded with them they have spilled all the way into the rockies. there must be 15 good exhaust shops within half hour of me and I have used half of them :)

how good does the dual Y pipes sound? Is it really deep or what?
