Seems to be the Cover

I too have been experiencing a rattle, but it appears to be the vinyl sliding cover "flapping" when I hit bumps or rough patches of road.

It seems to go away if I expose the front cabin panel. I assume it would also go away if I rolled up the back portion as well. Time does seem to be making it worse. Not sure if the vinyl piece is just stretching out, causing it to be looser and more vulnerable to flaps?

Based on observation, I think it is completely independent of any glass issues.

Hey guys,

I want to offer my help with this by sending the details to the Customer Service Manager in your area. If you haven’t done so already, please send a PM with your VIN, contact information, dealer name/state, and approximate mileage.

Same here Cory, sent it over to you.

I appreciate your help.

hi guys,I have also had the mystery rattle.Had the "A-Piller" fixed first ,then the noise came back.Dealer checked it out and didn't find any rattles.So..I looked it all over myself and I found the source of the rattle...It was the front plastic piece of the roof rack .Hope this helps!!

Really, have to check. When the windows are down, and the plastic interior slider is back just exposing the front glass moonroof, I will get a rattle or severe flapping from the interior shade slider?

Yup, the sunshade flapping is another issue that Ford isn't doing anything about. It only happens with the front windows down and it flaps like crazy on the highway, so much so that I open the sunshade completely to stop it OR forced to roll my windows up.

Piss poor design!!

You’re welcome, hornet130; I sent you a reply.

Does that mean you were able to get it taken care of, dzull?

Spengracin,

I still have your Explorer’s info from before, so drop me a line and I’ll arrange a follow-up.

I see that Rick is scheduled to contact you, blwnsmoke; please send a PM if you’d like him to call sooner.

So after getting my Ex back from the dealer with a "cant duplicate" today, low and behold it was rattling tonight. I have pinpointed it.. it isnt the moonroof itself... it is the headliner. If you push or pull on the lip off the headliner where it curves to the moonroof, it will stop. I have a feeling it is a piece of plastic that is just a hair loose or unsecured causing a little play and hence the rattle. I video recorded it tonight.. will post in the afternoon.

the rattle from my moonroof isn't actually coming from the moonroof. It's actually coming from the roof rack bars. The front of the roof rack where it attaches to the vehicle. The small plastic piece holding the rack to the car on the front seems to be wiggling around in the wind on both sides. I'm gonna point this out to the dealer when I take it in for my next service. I stuffed a little duct tape into the plastic piece to keep it from wiggling around and it did the trick.

Mine is the same. If I apply a little pressure to the headliner the rattle disappears.

Yesterday I was playing around with it.. I can duplicate it anytime by just pulling and pushing a little.. Ill be showing my service manager when all my parts come in.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but we have a '13 with this rattle. I'm not overly excited about this screwdriver fix either. We are on the second half of a 2000mile trip and that rattle has gotten really old. Honestly didn't notice it much til recently; it had only been occasional. Now it is CONSTANT. I have some socks and a hand towel squished up in the space between the rear glass and the headliner. The moon roof functions appropriately but of course we aren't using it with all the laundry we keep squeezing up there! Does anyone else have an update on this problem? Overall, we would buy our Ex again, exactly the same package. We would, of course, use a different dealer but that's another thread... Ordered in May, took delivery Aug. 12, 2012. Will be over 13K miles by the time we get home from Houston! Keep on truckin':salute:

Hi Toddy,

I want to get this escalated to your region's customer service manager. Send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, current mileage, daytime phone number, and full name; I'll make sure you're contact promptly so that this can get addressed.

Thanks!

Crystal

Thought I'd post an update. Just got our truck in for service and they said it had to do with some magnets up by the track. To be honest, I still hear the rattle but I think it is less frequent. My husband thinks it is unchanged. Going on an overnighter tomorrow and will give it a good highway trip to see if the rattle persists. If it does, we will try again...if at first you don't succeed...etc...

Nope, not fixed at all...Darnit...Taking the Green Bean back in next week. Oh well. Will keep at it till they fix it. Glad to see others don't seem to be complaining about this that much so it sounds like this might be a very limited issue.

We have a 2013 Ex XLT EcoBoost that has been just a pain. However our 2011 Mustang Vert has been an outstanding vehicle.....The XLT is so bad however, I doubt I'll ever buy a Ford product again, and that's a shame as I was looking forward to the Anniversity edition Mustang sometime around 2014 &1/2......I'm done with Ford, they have not done right by me on the Explorer........best regards Plum

I had the same problem. The dealership eventually replaced the whole thing. Keep on them, it's not supposed to rattle.
