egr/eco valve prob/hi-revs on start up

have just bought my 2nd exp with a strange problem!!
starts ok runs on very ltd power,wants to cruise all the time,shakey idle,engine light on & stinks like rotten fish!,have been told that its one or both of the eco/egr valves,any body else had this & fixed it,if so please share the cure!!!!
also my 1st exp is brill apart from when fired from cold it revs @2000-2500
chatters then settles,also revs hi on warm start but not every time,when you blip throttle revs take there time to settle have cleaned thottle flap & what i think is the icv valve same again any one else had this and fixed it,if so please share...

On the second one need the codes read to diagnose further. On the first one sounds like leaking lower manifold 'o' rings, or a vacuum leak of some kind.
