I am in the process of installing some JBA headers and I am on the EGR valve now. I have soaked it in PB and I started to crank on it a little with no luck. Before I give it everything I got, I wanted to make sure there is nothing wierd here and the top nut turns counter clockwise (left loosy) to remove. I am a bigger guy and have been know to break a few things in the past. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks for any help.

you are correct lefty loosey. nothing much but a rust welded nut. good luck. also carbon deposit!

I had to swap manifolds on my 98 Explorer a few months ago and I had no luck removing the EGR tube. I had the old exhaust manifold out of the car and in a vice and I ended up ripping the EGR tube threads and all right out of the mainifold. I was using a torch too.

Heat that sucker up. After its hot enough shoot some pb in there, wallah! I used a hefty adjustable wrench and pb and came off with ease.

I am going to try this again tonight. With regards to the 4.0, there is no room for a hefty adjustable wrench. I will post pics tonight!

I know with my 05 4.0 its pretty much the same area to work with. I was able to use an adj wrench, but just enough to break it loose. I just recently finish swappin out my 4.0 with another 4.0 motor. Another thing about that spot, there's a 2nd nut beneath the one ur trying to break loose. On my newer motor it stayed, but on the older motor it came off with it.

I actually broke a vice trying to remove a rusted egr tube from the valve. I had a pipe wrench and 5' long cheater pipe on it and it didn't budge. The vice went pop.

You may need to purchase new parts. Sorry to be a humbug.

I only had an hour to work on the truck last night and I was trying to remove the downpipe/header nuts and unplug the 4 O2 sensors. I am borrowing a torch from a friend and will give it a try tonight. I found a place selling the EGR tube just in case. Thanks for everyone's input.

I heated it up and still could not get it to budge. So I took a different approach and I removed the throttle body to gain easy access to the top of the EGR tube. It came off no problem.

Here it is, still attached to the exhaust manifold.

With a little heat, some more PB, and a much bigger wrench!

Now I am trying to remove the upper O2 sensor from the downpipe. I cannot see how I can get up there with anything. I will post some side-by-side pictures when I get everything off.
