Most batteries whether lead acid, NiMH or Li-Ion are recycled. For example, Toyota/Panasonic design their NiMH batteries to be fully recyclable including the plastic used for the cases. In fact, Toyota has patented a procedure to refurbish the batteries to get the longest possible life, and then recycle the materials when it is no longer possible to refurbish the individual cells.

It does take resources to produce the batteries in the first place, just like it takes resources to explore and drill for oil. There is no free lunch.
