Hello again!

As you are all well aware the 95+ has the rear disk brakes with a built in drum for the e-brake. Has anyone ever replaced these e-brakes? My pads are shot and I ran out of time so I took it in and they claim they have to remove the axel to do it. Is this true or has anyone else replaced these without too much trouble? If so, how?

Thanks!

Emergency Brakes

Hey Taxxman,
I just bought a '97 with a few things wrong with it one of them being the rear brakes had about 5% of pad left.
What my mechanic found was that the emer. shoes were cracked possably (probably) from someone driving with the brake engaged. Anyway adding that to was fixit list was not too expensive. 1 hour of labor and 30 bucks for the part. They didn't have to remove the axle.
1 hour of mech time runs around $80 in these parts.

Well. I decided to go ahead with it and they had already done it when I called back. They had to pull the axcel anyway to put new wheel studs in. So it is done now.

They should have been able to put the new wheel studs in with outh pulling the axle, and they should have been able to change the E-brake pads with he axle still in.

I was just working on mine this past weekend and after a lot of beating it with a mallet to get the drum/rotor off I found that my shoes were also cracked. The E brake has not worked since I bought it & whenever I would push on the pedal it felt like nothing was moving. I used a full can of brake cleaner and the mechanism started moving again. The hardest part for me was locating replacement shoes. In my area there are only 2 places to buy them, the dealer $93.00 or CarQuest $24.00.

You don;t have to drop the axle. We did it fine and even replaced a stripped stud with it all on the truck.

Also the e-brake pads on the X are severly undersized for sucha large truck. I replaced mine at 85K because they were worn down and cracked. 10,000 miles later they don;t work again. i never drive with them on and hardly ever use them. the replacement kit was $100. i have come to believe they will never work right so I just don;t care anymore.

Have you tried adjusting them? There is a rubber plug on the back side of the dust shield. Pull that off and you will see the adjustment mechanism. It has a nut feature with spikes sticking out. You can use a screwdriver to push on the spikes and turn the nut, or they actually make a tool for it...don't know what it's called. You want to turn the nut to the right (like you're tightening it). This will cause the mechanism to expand and should allow the pads to contact with the drum again. When I did the axle swap from the '00, the e-brake didn't work too well, but after the adjustment, it works great.

The best way to do it is with both rear wheels off the ground on jack stands. You have to adjust both sides. After you get the basic function back again, you can get them balanced by pushing the pedal in a few clicks and rotating each rear wheel by hand to find out where one side just starts to get hard to turn. Then you adjust the other side to match.

Well I am back. As far as the brake pads went on mine they were shot. It only cost me $130 to get the tires balanced, e-brake shoes replaced, and the studs replaced. I don't think that was a bad deal. I got the old shoes out and it was a real bear. I was also able to get new studs in there but could not get them pounded all the way in. It seams the easiest way was to pull the axel. But, it is done now and only took them an hour or so.

I do agree the pads are small and don't do too much, but I like them there when I am working on my truck. They are also hard to track down the parts.

jet ski puller,
at first we did adjust them, but they are loose again so I assume it means they wore down somehow, but I will double check.

I just did mine last weekend. What a pain!
You can see why the parking brake didnt work.

... and it is possible to wrench them off without removing the axle, barely.
