...hold the 4x4 hi button for a brief second or so ...you should here the transfercase engage...try this a couple times...if not, you should here clicking at least coming from your rear access panel where your wiper fluid bottle is located...i hope this helps...

that's the thing, i am not hearing clicking from the back, i just installed a stereo and grounded my amp on one of the rear washer reservoir screws, the amp has cut out a couple of times, do you think there is a chance that that may have screwed something up

...thats a hard one to answer if you don't know for sure that it worked before...did the amp cut out anytime you tried putting it into 4wd???

the guy i got it from said that it did work when i got it, and the nite i picked it up he got the light to kick on on the 4x4 button, i know i have been having grounding problems with my amp cuz when it cuts out all i gotta do is wiggle the wire to get it back on, is there a chance i blew the main fuse under the hood

and no the amp didn't shut off when i tried to use the four wheel drive, today was the first day i have tried using it

..yes, i would check the relays under the hood...;)

well first things first, decide what is more important, a functional 4x4 or a booming stereo.

I'd disconnect the amp temporarily and see if that changes the scenario. I'm thinking your electric shift motor is bad. Search around, you can fix it yourself. I wish I had known this, I removed mine and have to use vise grips to change from 2wd to 4x4.

thanx guys, i will disconnect the amp and check the relays under the hood, and yes i would rather have my four wheel drive over the bumpin stereo, don't need that **** winter time anyway:yelexp:

4x4 shift motor

jack up the vehicle ,have someone inside with the truck with it running and you go underneath and with the wood handle from a hammer gently tap the shift motor while the other person is pushing the 4x4 switch this worked for me as a temporary fix to get the motor unstuck...a ford mechanic told me when the 4x4 is not used often it will bind up for some reason

ya, but my light doesn't come on at all, i'm guessing the jacking it up and tapping on that box only works if the light will come on

...have you checked all the relay's and fuses??? have you opened up the rear panel and visually seen the 4x4 computer and checked if it was plugged in or even there???...if it is there it should also have a little red light on it...

if your fuses and motor are checking out ok it is also common for the switch on the dash to get hot and burn up, which is an easy replacement once you find one, commonly found at a salvage yard. also check the wire plug in that plugs into the back of the switch on the dash, people have come in to work with melted plastic all over the wire connections. not a good thing. hope this helps you out.
