I live in the Uk with a 98 XLT. I am experiencing two problems that the local dealer cannot rectify. First, when under load in low gear I get a noise from the engine like rustlung dry leaves or hydraulic fluid squishing. This is only evident under power and goes off when the gearbox changes up. They think it could be something to do with the manifold distorting and say its nothing to worry about. Second I get a 'chirp' from somewhere at the top of the steering column when the vehicle goes over a sharp bump. Is there a bush somewhere up here that can be replaced or lubricated. I don't want o fiddle with it too much because of the airbag trigger mechanisim. Any help would be appreciated.

If memory serves, there is a metal piece (plate) in the steering wheel that comes loose and makes noise. Run a search for steering noise or steering column clunk etc. and you should find the thread(s) describing it and how to fix. Was discussed in the last year....

Sorry, can't help w/the engine noise. Can you be more specific about how/when you hear it? Also, what engine/transmission do you have?
