2011 Ford Explorer XLT
Has anyone else experienced any engine knocking/rattling sounds?

I have a 2011 XLT with 4,700 miles on it. During initial acceleration and final breaking (so between 0-5 mph) I often hear an engine knock or rattling noise. I am using 87 octaine fuel as per the owners manual. I just tried using 89 octane in case it was a gas issue but haven't noticed much difference. I searched the boards but have not found any similar complaints.

More than likely it's the gas give it some time when you upgrade gas it will not go away so fast it will take awhile like a good run until the engine gets nice and hot and gun it once or twice !

Why would the engine knock on braking? It's not the gas. It's something else.

Engine knocking on downhill, idling, over bumps or driving under 5 mph

Help! My 2011 Explorer Ltd makes an annoying rattling sound underneath when I drive downhill (such as in a parking garage on downhill ramp), when idling going over bumps in drive or reverse, or when braking or driving under 5 mph. Does anyone else have this problem and have you found a fix? I have taken it in for service twice and they seem to have no clue.

First thing to check would be the fasteners that hold the cooling duct in place that is remove when doing an oil change.

My Limited has been making a real racket for months. Going in next week. I suspect a loose or damaged front sway bar.

I'm having the same issue. Removed the air cooler dam. Still get a rattling noise. Just when going over speed bumps or uneven ground. Rattles. Going in next week.

Great next step, broken strut. Give my Canadian colleagues a shout if you need their help. Here's a link to FordServiceCA's profile: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/member.php?u=233337

2011 Explorer rattling noise

UPDATE!!! Finally fixed! A service manager with 30 years' experience finally figured it out and fixed my rattling issue - it was the strut. It was not the sway bar (which they fixed several months ago and that did nothing). They figured out which strut it was and replaced it and problem was finally solved after 1.5 years!

I'm curious. What was wrong with the strut? Was it just loose or had it given up the ghost?

There is a ball joint on either end. They deteriorate and rattle.

Mine began doing it about 25,000 miles. It began rattling when crossing highway transitions, rumble strips, etc. Took a while to figure it out. Finally just started grabbing various suspension parts, and when I grabbed the strut it was loose.

Only took a few minutes to replace it.

Rattle from front right wheel area - not A Pillar
