My wife’s car started making this noise a few weeks ago. I’m hoping someone can help point me in the right direction as far as figuring out what’s going on. It only happens on the first start of the day (cold start). Our driveway is slopped and it seems to only happen when we’ve parked it upslope (front of the car is higher) overnight. I’m wondering if it’s a timing chain but not sure how that would be related to it only happening once a day? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is certainly not my area of expertise!

It’s a ‘17 Explorer Sport with the 3.5 Ecoboost with 80k miles on it.

Here is a video link for the sound it’s making.

That is not good.

I hope its the turbo, I had a Freestyle with the same sound. It was the Cam shaft attached to the water pump and "wallowed" out the Cam bearings on the water pump side of the head. Needed to replace the head. But the Explorer's water pump is not driven off the Cam shaft.

The phaser video mentions a start up rattle. I would call your noise a knock, big difference between the two.

This would be your typical start up phaser rattle.

I have the exact same noise. It start at 48k miles and i now have 76k miles. I have heard some say its cam phase issue and others say no. The last time i did an oil change the very first start i laid on the ground to see if i could hear something. Interesting i hear 2 diff sounds 1 being a rod knock down low and another sound up top rattle that you hear in your video. I feel like both sounds are from low oil pressure after an oil change since the filter takes time to fill up and the cam phasers need oil pressure. If you figured the noise out it would be great to see what fixed it. More than likely I’ll be going to the dealer in december with it.
