Got diagnosed with timing chain issues. Have noise coming from left rear of engine. Car frame is coated with oil. Am in the process of pulling the engine. The big question is, "Can I support the trany with a jack, unbolt the bell housing and remove the engine"? Have a lot of people waving me off on this deal. Am ready to install new timing chain kit. Am a licensed A&P, is this not just another turbine engine? Need to be informed! Thanks for the help.

Welcome To The Forum! I personally didn't use support for my transmission except for removal of the engine to keep it still and I used a jack and a block of wood so it helped distribute the weight and not make an impression on the transmission pan.

welcome

I did an engine pull a few months ago. I used a few wood blocks and was fine. Make sure you refill the trans before you start it up or you will be replacing a sylanoid body next.

glen4x4 thanks for the reply. Were poised to pull, had one mechanic tell us to unbolt torque converter from flywheel through inspection plug on bottom of bell housing. Pulled plug rotated engine could not see any bolt heads through opening. Is the torque conv. engaging a splined shaft? And will the engine just slide away from trany, or is there something else securing trany to engine.

there should be 4 bolts coming through the flex plate (Fly wheel) at each 90th degree(the threads are on the t/q converter, so your looking for nutz, and they are 2-3 inches up from the outside of the flex plate) so there should be quite a bit of turning of the crank needed. You will need to pull the trans about 3 - 4 inches back (which requires dropping the cross member and the likes).. i needed a zig zag'd wrench to get to these ones, so they may be a little further inside than i remember, keep looking, THEY ARE THERE.

You should be able to get to the torque converter bolts through the whole where the starter goes. Then use a pry bar to separate the tranny from the motor, you shouldn't have to physically move the transmission at all.
