Hello all...
I have a 96 Explorer Eddie Bauer 176K miles. I got it cheap because it had tranny issues (2nd to 3rd flare and flashing O/D light occasionally) and a weak cylinder #4 which had the check engine light on so it wouldn't pass NJ inspection. It's from Florida and has NO rust anywhere
.
I picked up a used 4.0 OHV engine w/ 81K miles and it's super clean. I bought a rebuilt 4R55E. I installed everything and checked the compression on the motor first. Everything was good,175 to 190 psi in all cylinders. Then I installed plugs and wires and she fired right up. From the start-up I got a flashing O/D light and check engine light so I called the transmission rebuilder and they said my codes were caused by a wiring harness problem. Sure enough, the blue plug was not snapped in. I snapped it in properly and cleared the codes and no more problem with that.
I drove for a little under 100 miles with no problems @ all. It ran and shifted like new. Last night I was driving home and it started surging when I let off the gas (tach moving up and down about 100 rpms) When I pulled into my driveway, it stalled as I was stopping. Now it will stall as soon as I put in in any forward gear selection. It goes in reverse no problem. I am waiting for the trans shop to call me back, but figured I'd chime in here for suggestions.
