so i have gone through 2 4.6's in my mounty and quite honestly think they are now the biggest pieces of crap. i want to find another engine that is solid durable and reliable that can work well under heavy loads. i need something that will drop right in and bolt up or minor modifications. will a 5.4 or 5.0 fit?

The 4.6L engines are actually very durable engines. What exactly has gone wrong with the 2 that you've gone through?

No doubt. The 4.6 has been around for 15 years now. Mustang owners are making unreal power with them. I have a 97 Cougar with a 4.6 with just under 200k and it runs so smooth.

BTW the 5.4 is the same design as the 4.6 but has a taller deck so it's not going to fit in your Mountaineer.

The 5.0 will be a total custom job.

i have been told that the rods are knocking. it has happened to two in 6 months. the second one with only 29k on it. will the 5.4 fit but will stick out of my hood or what?

The 5.4L block is a bit taller and wider than the 4.6L. I'm sure it can be done but I'm not sure of the amount of fabricating that it would take to do it right.

Rods are knocking? Were these brand new motors, rebuilts, junkyard motors or what?

rebuilt by ford from the junkyard. first one was original with 104k on it.

Sounds more like you need a new source for motors.

I know for a fact that it's not a design flaw or some inherent problem with that engine that is causing the premature failure of your second one.

ditto.

4.0 V6 should bolt right up...

should bolt up? really?
They use the same auto trans behind the SOHC 4.0L and the 4.6L OHC now?

I ask because I dont know Gen III stuff well enough :)

I dont know.. but damn that would be cool put a 5.4 in it.. get the badges off an F150 and stick on it too :D

Blew 2 4.6's with knocking rods?

That's weird....they werent rebuilds were they?

Maybe you got a motor out of a mounty that got in an accident.

Yes, they all use the 5r55s.

no the 5.4 is not a direct bolt up, and not worth the trouble either imho.

Where does it come up with that? My 02, 04, and 05 have the 5R55W. Two are 4.0 and one is a 4.6.
