I just got a Flowmasters 40 series muffler put on and the mandrel bent pipes (done by meineke because the performance shop i took it to wanted to save money and over charged me) are so poorly bent that in some areas i can tell that the pipe has been slightly crushed so I was wondering what would happen if after the muffler and about 4-5 inches of exhaust pipe(before the bad bends) i cut the pipe with either a hacksaw or my skill saw. Just wonder if there was any reason in which this would be a bad idea.

If I understand correct, you just want to dump the exhaust about 5 inches behind the muffler. If so, there's nothing really wrong with this. Many people do it. Only drawback is sometimes the exhaust gases collect under the truck instead of escaping out the back or side.

Ok, so more than likely this should work fine?

Thanks. I'll be chopping that off tomorrow.

IMO not a good idea. Even NASCAR has exhaust exiting past the body of the veh. not under it. Your piping isnt going to make a half a cars length difference in a 1/4 mile race. Better to be safe.

I had it for months with no exhaust ever making it inside.

So as far as inspections go, will this pass? I mean it still will have the muffler.

Dangerous? It may be a waste of time if you're going for HP, but not dangerous.

Dangerous as in the exhaust gas makes its way into the car, but will i pass inspection?

I think you need a tail pipe behind the rear tire to pass inspection.

Carbon Monoxide gas is a wierd gas, cannot smell it, cannot see it.
It can get ya without warning, it is very bad ****.
The only upside to dieing from CM, is you have a very nice, rosy red color in your cheeks when your dead, you look better than normal.
Been there, seen that, is not nice

What about those i have seen that have the exhaust tips coming out under the rear passenger door? Gibson makes a setup like that and they dont make illegal exhaust setups. Oh ya and as for the CM, is the main fear when im stopped cause i dont plan on sitting in a closed garage with my car running or just sitting around.

i wouldn't really worry about.

on mine after the exhaust fell apart, i did a cheap fix until i figure out what i wanna do with it.

i just threw on a new pipe behind the cat. put on a thrush turbo that i got for free and ran a piece of flex-pipe off of that directed down almost under the axle.

ran my brothers the same way for a cheap fix.

i haven't had any problems and neither has he.

i could see it being a problem maybe in a traffic jam and whatnot or sitting idling in a driveway for a period of time.

i'd say as long as you have the vent on for heat or a/c their should be a problem

I'm guessing you meant there should not be a problem, so i think im gonna just make the cut and maybe buy a turndown tip to help direct the Carbon monoxide.

Tomorrow I will stop by a local state inspector and post whether or not this setup is illegal or not in the state of Texas.

In ontario, a buddy of mine who is a mechanic and does inspect vehicles (the only one here is a safety for when the vehicle is being stolen or being put on the road after time off it(like a resto)) said that it only needs to go past the drivers seat here. So we can do almost whatever we want. BTW, how sealed is the ****pit of a stock car? I can't see it being sealed too tight.

It will be much louder also.

It won't be loader if it's after the muffler. It might be only slightly because the outlet will be closer to the cabin.
