I'm interested in changing the way my Explorer's Exhaust sounds... duh!

My Father has a 1998 Ford Explorer, V8, Eddie Bauer Edition, I'm not sure if being an Eddie makes any difference, just thought I'd through that out there.

I've driven it a few times, and I prefer how his sounds when it start ups, a little grumble, but not to much.

I've searched on the site, and most people recommend the 40 series from Flowmaster, I'd like to go with a Flowmaster because of their reputation, but was writing this to see what can I see to get closer to his sound? (other then dropping in a 5.0L).

For reference, I drive a 1993 Explorer, V6.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you can find something that makes the 4.0 sound like the 5.0 V8, let me know! Plain facts are, you cannot make the v6 sound like the 5.0. You can find something to make it sound pretty good, though. Are you looking for a better tone (and still be quiet~ish), or louder?

Edit: The 4.0 can sound pretty good when revving with some louder mufflers, but I have noticed it seems to have an awful annoying drone at idle, or at speed when cruising. Just my opinion, though

The force II catback from FM has a good tone. Not loud, & it doesn't drone. However it may be too quiet for what you want.

I think swapping the muffler out with a 40 series would be fine for what your looking for.

The catback uses a 50 series.

Tbars just put in a flowmaster muffler, and though it doesn't quite sound like a V8, it does sound pretty nice for a 4.0 ohv. It might even be a 40 series, ask him about it.

mine has a flowmaster muffler and I really like it. It makes it sound pretty beefy and it's decently loud.

like charli said, it's not possible to make a 4.0 V6 sound like a 5.0 V8. Sometimes you can get close though. I think a flowmaster muffler would make you happy.

FYI, just about all of the common mufflers have failed to come close to the V8 sound on V6 Explorers. Try something which others haven't, the mufflers that no one else buys. I'm eyeing the 55770 Edelbrock SDT muffler and a 2.5" resonator, with stock tail pipe.

The V6 noise is annoying, the V8 stock sound is great to me. Good luck,

I have a Gibson swept side catback on my 94 and really like it. Gives a nice tone at idle and while i've heard from my friends it sounds a little weak outside at WOT inside it sounds great, just loud enough were you can hear it but not so loud its obnoxious.

It cost me 260.70 to my door from autoanything.com

I installed a Cherrybomb Pro muffler and had a 2.5" tailpipe bent up and welded on. So far this is the best sound and sound control. I've run the stock, dynomax turbo catback, flowmaster 40, straight pipe, magnaflow, now this Cherrybomb. I also pulled the muffler and tried the Super 44 and did not like it at all. Its a good bit louder than stock at idle, can hear it while driving, mellows out a lot at highway speeds, but really opens up when you step on it. At idle it really sounds like a nice V8. Heres a soundclip. Yes, its a 2nd gen, but its still the OHV.

I'll bet you weren't planning on it spitting water on the camera huh?

Not really.. I was surprised that much actually came out.

Just a thought, i know Borla used to make a full exhaust for our trucks. I haven't been able to find it for sale anymore nor have i ever heard a sound clip. I'm sure it'd sound pretty decent though.

That is good Dan, the original Cherry bomb company is around here and doesn't get much notice any longer. That's much better than stock.

I just used a Sweet Talker on mine. Basically a no baffle bottle type muffler. Sounded great. Real deep and throaty, till I put my new fan clutch in. Now all I hear is my fan going. Doh....

i have a flowmaster 50 series SUV on my truck and a friend of mine just had a 40 delta installed on his 4.0 ranger ohv. im jelous, i like his more than mine the 50 scavenges a lot more where his is more of a steady rumble. so i'd suggest the 40.

The muffler I have is basically a copy of the IMCO pro muffler, but is available locally at pepboys. I wanted to get the Aerochamber by hooker, but couldn't find it locally and the price of the Pro was right, at $55. Plus I think it has better tone and sound compared to anything else I've had. Although straight pipe sounded real mean at idle up to about 2500 rpms.

I thought of using the SDT muffler because it's what I've planned to buy two of for my Mountaineer. I'd like to test them myself. Night,

so i already had a post, just deleted and started a new... last one had to many words that didn't make sense.

1. thanks for everything guys
2. i understand i can't mimic the 5.0 sound without the 5.0
3. i'm trying to make my sound louder and better. but i don't want it to be overly loud like the chevy z71's running around (make sense?), i'm just wanting something that'll have a little rumble to it at the idle, and when accelerating it has a nice sound, and when i STOMP on the gas, it sounds great

Hunterdan, i'm a little confused, do you have the cherrybomb muffler on in that video? i couldn't tell if you were talking about the super 44 or not, but i think the last bit of that comment was intended fo rthe cherrybomb?

and my last is this, the exhaust system on mine is stock so far, i'm not interested in changing to much, just the muffler really. i was wondering if anyone knew what the stock measurement was? i.e. 2.25", 2.5", 3.0", they seem to have everything.i think i might end up crawling underneath and measuring...

thanks for all the help so far..

Hunterdan: i think i'll end up getting what your video showed, i just want it a little quieter though! is there anyway to make it quieter?

You may look to have a resonator installed after the muffler to quiet it down some. 2.25" pipes will probably knock the volume down some as well, but I think 2.5" pipe works well. Yes, the muffler in that clip was the Cherrybomb. Just noticed that Cherrybomb also makes a longer cased muffler, the Elite which should be quieter with a similar tone to it. It just has an extra chamber to it.

The stock pipe also will really limit the sound from all the bends as opposed to having something custom/aftermarket put on.

on mine 01 sport (v6) i have a straight pipe w/ only 1 cat, i remove the cats from the y-pipe..and had a full exhaust pipe done..mandrel bent..sounds very much like a V8 at low rpms..at higher rpms it has the loud pitch noise v6s are known for but it still sounds good..
on my 04 V6 i plan on doing a magnaflow exhaust...makes it sound more like a g35ish sound..its a eddie bauer so i don't mind that sound
