So, in essence, you want a larger-diameter cat-back without a tailpipe?

You could always buy a cat-back system, like the flowmaster force II, and sell the tailpipe.

could i just buy a flowmaster 40 muffler and install it then cut the pipe off right after? would sound good and would that help in my horses a bit>?

You could do that...a flowmaster40 with a turndown pipe immediately after would be a bit loud for me, but that's me...

You'd also need to find out what's legal in CA - i always thought most enviro-concious states required that the exhaust at least make it behind the rear axle...i dunno

You can def. do that. Might help a little w/ the hp and the sound is a personal pref. thing.

Usually! That is how is set up here in VA! It is very common for a SUV having to have the exhaust exit out pass the rear axle.

I did it

I went to a shop had a flowmaster and a pip that comes out under the rear door. I dont know if I picked up HP but it sounds great love to get people in low cars on phones. It was about $150. I think if I had to do over and got a deal on a cat back I would do that. I was not able to get a bracket on the pipe. On some bumps it hits the frame. The tip is always getting dirty. I think a 2.5 cat back might get more power, I do not know. It looks and sound grate dont get me wrong, I just think I could have spent the money better. As for the cops they have never had a problem with that just everything else. I have been stoped and given several fix a ticket but not for that. It is amazing that companies dont have to tell you it is not for the street. The smog guy did not say anything just got confused, he could not find the pipe.

What engine do you have? I bet it's pretty loud, about as loud as it would be without a tailpipe. Probably sounds great!

my final exhaust question

ok so im gonna go get my exhaust changed final this week so my last question is what would sound better? Y pipe your intlet and go thru a super 40 series single in single out swept side? or...y pipe inlet and go thru single in duel out and go 2 pipes out the sides with a original 40 series? (4.0L SOHC)

Single side swept.

When you terminate the exhaust before the axle are there any problems with fumes getting into the cab? This is something I have been wondering about for a while now.

YES there is I had a glasspack with a turn down before the axle and it was awful. I loved the way it sounded but the exhaust getting in was nasty.

Side exit before the axle is legal in Kali, the only restriction is it cannot be higher than 22 in. above the ground.

Listen to my exhaust and tell me what you think. Its an experiment. I will have to e-mail the wav file because I don't know where to put the file yet online. PM me if you want and I will send it. I think it sounds good, but thats just me.

Well if anybody is interested in what mine sounds like its here. Its kinda cat back just not all the way back. :D I havent had any problems with exhaust yet. Cant leave it like that though I dont think it will pass inspection.

http://www.explorerforum.com/files/37614/100_0769.MOV here you go... give it a min to load, it will though
I noticed you have an H pipe what all did that bring to the table for you? How does the H pipe affect performance?

umm it wasnt too noticable, but i dont have a chip so im hurtin all together. this does however act as an equilizer to your pipes, that is important. I personally want to redo it and add an "x" pipe before it. this helps equilize it more while giving me more backpressure. so my system will be and X to cross the paths, and h to stabilize the exhaust and my pipes. that to me is the ultimate setup. i am waiting till i replace the headers, then i am replacing the pipes going from the muffler to the h. i hope that was understandable
