I have dual tips, and a hanging spare tire, at the same time. The exhaust shop said it was tricky, but they did it

you have any pics of under the rear of your x? im interested in doing my new exhaust myself, and my friend has the bender and welder at his shop.

I don't know what it is called, but there is a shock absorber thingy about 1/3 inboard on rear axle. This is an area with clearance issues, along with spare tire clearance. I can't get it high enough to show in a pic, but if you have tubing and a bender, you'll figure it out.

cool, ty

Explorer Sport (2 door)
1992
4.0L V6 OHV
Stock (From what i know)
Custom bent Cat-back done by local Muffler shop
Flowmaster Deltaflow 40 Series
Single-in single-out
2.5" piping custom bent from cat to stainless steel exhaust tip

The sound has a nice rumble to it. Fairly loud, as it is louder than my friend's 5.4L V8 with single delta 50. In cab noise is noticable and somewhat annoying at times, but i love it and would not change it.

i have dual chamber 2 flowmasters on my 01 sport and i still got the spare tire underneth my x like jtsmith does on his. I have the same excat setup as jtsmith.

Vehicle: 2001 Ford Explorer XLT
Engine: 4.0 SOHC
Old Exhaust: OEM Stock
New Exhaust: Gibson Side-Swept CAT Back System
Comes With: Gibson single inlet muffler, 2.5" single pipe, replacement flanges and 3" stainless tip

Installation:
- Unbolted the flange that held the stock muffler to the Y pipe from the CATs.
- Then unbolted the flange holding the muffler to exhaust pipe.
I found that to snake out the OEM exhaust pipe I had to cut it in half just before the rear axle.
- With the old stuff out of the way put the flange over the Y pipe and fit the new muffler to the Y pipe.
- Hand tighten flange
- Snake the new 2.5" piping in and attach the pipe hanger into the rubber bracket. I found spraying the hole of the rubber bracket with WD-40 made it slip in with little effort
- Fit the flange over the piping and attach the piping to the muffler.
- Make sure everything's lined up and tighten both flanges with a socket wrench.
- Installation of the stainless tip is obvious. I found that after installing my 3" BL I had to cut about 6 to 8in. off the pipe and put the tip back on so it didn't hang down so much.

Remarks: I like the sound of the Gibson. It isn't over-bearing at idle. But when you stomp on the gas it definitly gets throaty and can be hear clearly in the cabin. I've had it for just over 2 years now and it is starting to look corroded where the muffler and the exhaust pipe attach due to evaporation. Weilding that spot before it gets bad would solve the problem I would think. Other than that I've got no issues with the quality. It's fully performed to my expectations.

do you have a sound clip?

Who me? No. I could try and make one with my handheld though and post it. May take a couple days but I'll try it and see how it comes out.

jtsmith.. Im trying to figure out which muffler you have.. You said you have a 40 flowmaster with dual in/dual out. Are you sure its a 40 Series or is it the 50 Series SUV. I checked the Flowmaster web site and couldnt find any 40 series with dual in/dual out. The only dual in/dual out I coudl find was a 50 series SUV part number 524554. Do you have the part number? I ask becuase your truck has that sound Im looking for. Loud and mean. Has anyone else been able to come close to this sound with a 5.0L. I am open to any and all suggestions.. Louder the better...

The "no muff too tuff" shop told me it was a 40 series, but I am not positive.
They did say it was a Ford truck-suv muffler, and was actually all they had that would fit. I got lucky I guess
I'll see about the part number.

Forgot to ask if someone could make a measurement for me. I'm looking for the distance between the dual in ports on a 50 Series SUV (from the center of the hole to the other center). Flowmaster told me it was exactly 4", but I don’t believe them. I'm trying to determine if I can simply cut of the old muffler (right up close to the muffler) and weld the new muffler in its place. That is of course if the 50 SUV is going to sound like jtsmith's X.. Thanks

Yes I stand corrected, it is in fact a 50 series, 23" long, but was given to the muffler shop by a flowmaster rep for me to try 2 years ago, because I kept *****in about how bad the glasspacks they installed sounded. I am told it was a prototype with dual blending chambers?
I hope you get the noise you are after, but remember I am running a different camshaft, which also has to do with the sound

Well it looks like I'm going to go with the Super 40 series muffler. I have decided that the 50 SUV isnt going to be a dramaticaly louder than stock and it requires just as much welding to make it fit. If Im gong to go to all this trouble I might as well make it worth while.. If anyone can think of a reason that a single Super 40 series is not a good idea please let me know. I plan on fabbing up a Y collector to feed into the muffler and using a short 1 foot tailpipe to dump just before the axle.. (Or if it resonates too too much than I may add the stock resonator and tailpipe). I love the way jtsmiths truck sounds but without all those mods I dont think ill get that sound out of the 50 SUV. Ill post some before and after sound clips in 2-3 weeks (ya thats how long it takes to get a muffler in Canada)

Vehicle:Mercury Mountaineer
Year:1997
Engine:5.0L V8
Previous Exhaust:OEM
New Exhaust:True Dual Exhaust with two 40 series original flow flowmasters (Single Inlet,Single inlet) with 2 1/4 inch piping ran from collector back...with two side exit exhaust pipes with 3 inch tips ran right behind rear tire.
Installation:Installation was done by a local friend/muffler shop...ran without a Y-pipe.
Sound:5.0L Mustang sound but with a deeper tone and more aggressive tone...not too much interior noise except when under hard acceleration....quite loud outside of the car...really nice sound at idle!
Remarks:I really suggest this setup.

I would like to hear it. Post a soundclip

mercuryman97 Can I get a picture of your setup. Where did they find space to install a second muffler? Did you remove the spare tire? Sound clip would be great as well. Thanks

I ask because I’ve ordered a Super 40 with 2.5" center in and 2.5" center out. I was thinking about true dual exhaust but didn’t want to loose the spare tire (no big deal when your in the city but out in the middle of BFN a flat can be a real drag). I'm going to fab up a Y collector and dump just before the rear axle for the time being. I’m a little unsure what to expect of a single muffler on the 5.0L. I know 5.0L mustangs always ran 2 mufflers. I don’t know if this will be too restrictive or sound real bad.
