Explorer shuts off....

sometimes when my explorer isn't fully warmed up, when i put it into reverse or drive it will stumble then shut off. But if i let it warm all the way up it's fine? any ideas, the truck is all stock

So it runs rough when its cold? Most vehicles do this, yours being 12 years old might just have it worse. Just let it warm up.

mine does this also. here the last month or so it wont even stay idle. not sure what the deal is there. runs great never has left me stranded just she's rough around the edges... i spose it takes time , work and a little $...

i would try replacing the tcs [temp control sensor] it tells the truck how cold it is and adjusts the air fuel ratio to that...and i would also try cleaning the mas air sensor and the iac....hope this helps.....

IAC: Idle Air Control valve. it the tube shaped thing right behind the throttle body, mounted to the side of the intake plenum. To clean, take off the air intake tube, get a can of air intake cleaner, then using the straw, spray into the little hole on the right hand inner wall of the throttle body. You should clean the throttle body at the same time. Let the engine, once started, run a few minutes to burn it all off.

cool thanks, i have been having this problem when u first start the truck it will run like normal for a few sec, then the rpms will go up and down really fast then die, so i have to start it and hold the gas for a few seconds at like 1500 rpms then it will run ok, but if its really cold and i have been driven for only a few min and i pull up to a light or somethin and the car is idlen for i starts to die again unless i hit the gas when it starts and keep the rpms up...weird

yeah, it sounds like a intake problem, hopefully cleaning the IAC and the TBwill help. Remember, the gas pedal has basicly nothing to do with gas, it controls the air. The computer controls the gas. So if you are having to hold in the pedal manually, then its probably the IAC.

yeah i have a new bbk tb~ and i was thinking its not dirty, could it be even though its new? or am i mis-understanding this? any help would be awsome!

well, it's still having the same problem even after i cleaned everything, but all i have to do is put it in drive or reverse and keep the brake on and give it some gas and it doesn't do it after that, but the rpms still drop on the intial time (when puttin into reverse or drive when cold) and if you don't give it some gas after you've put it in gear it will die. Another problem i've havin w/ the truck is the o/d will not come on! i'll have it in o/d and put it in drive and nothing happens, no down gear no anything? so it's liek i have a 3 speed auto.. wtf? i have 31's w/ pansey 3.27's and i'm still tachin close to 35 hundred at 65 (which is actually over 70 w/ the gearing and tires i have). it's not a big problem really cuz it shifts great thru all the gears but my fuel mileage is terrible
