First off, I have a 98 Ford Explorer XLT, V6, 4.0 Liter with about 165,000 Miles on it. I got it with about 148000 miles. I started getting the 2-3 shift flare issue (that I found out about all too late on this forum). I'm not real familiar with working on anything but a honda accord.

A transmission place we took it to, just told us they would replace it for $1800 but the car is only worth about that much. My father in law and I drained the fluid which was like mud, and dropped the valve body replacing the valve body gasket, which was blown completely, and the the separator plate gasket, and filter. After doing this it worked great for about 2 weeks. And my wife was going to the air port and ended up with fluid everywhere.... she forced it to get the final few miles (unfortunately)

We get it towed back to the house. And now no matter what gear you are in it lunges forward, even in Neutral and reverse, but nothing else. Not knowing what else to do, I went ahead and did the fluid flush, filter and gasket replacement again. The fluid this time was still murky but much better. When I got it back together though the problem was still there.

Also, we didn't know we it had an alarm system on it, and right now the only way it will start is if it you hit the valet button below the dash, that we were lucky to find. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but I figured I better mention it.

So I guess my question is would the VB rebuild, and a replacement of the EPC solenoid fix this issue as well as the 2-3 flare problem they talk about here: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174202&highlight=gears+forward

Any helps and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Rebuilding the VB at this point probably won't fix it. Those last few miles with out enough fluid probably ruined the forward clutch. Which is why it wants to go forward all the time. Does the OD light flash? if it does get the DTC code pulled. It sounds like a complete rebuild or replacement is needed.
