Friday, buy a battery come home starts right away no problems, go down there today, Explorer wont start, it trys to start, but wont start, i hear a click from the fuel pump relay, i unplugged the battery overnight, and still wont start, the explorer hasnt been driven in about a year and a half, so what should i check next?

What kind of no start: Is it the kind where the starter doesn't seem to turn the motor over right, or the kind where the starter is doing its part, but the motor is running on its own?

Hi there, idk how to post a new thread and im just gonna jump in here… i got a 1992 ford explorer xlt auto. I had to change the starter because it was starting to stick (tap with a wrench lightly). Old starter would work after tapping making me think its the solenoid on the old starter going out. so i tried a new starter and all it does is is turn the starter motor but doesn’t engage the fly wheel. I pulled out the new and tested it by hooking it to a battery and it works, tried the same thing on the old starter and after tapping it, the old one worked too. After putting the new one in i get the same thing the starter just spins. I got the new starter from autozone with part number DL3232s. Im stumped. Any help is appreciated. Also i hope i posted in the right spot.

When you have the starter out you need to check for any missing teeth or pieces from the flexplate.. the older trucks like yours would break the flex plates and the starter had nothing to engage on. The flexplate is what connects the transmission to the engine and gives the starter a surface to turn. If the flexplate breaks around the hub or strips its teeth then a new starter will act the same as the old.

Welcome to explorerforum I saw your post and it is now bumped up to the top. You should remove the starter and use your phone to take some pictures from up inside there

If the flexplate broke the trans will have to come out to replace it
