Ok, my water pump is shot and I need to get the fan off. My Haynes manual says that the 93 Ex has a left hand thread, but with the rotation direction that doesn't seem right. I did a search, also without a straight answer. Right hand or left hand thread? Thanks, Rick

My '92 uses right hand threads. In many cases, it's stamped into the fan shroud.

i think my 93 says "left hand thread on fan clutch" on the plastic shroud

it is on the shroud...........you need to borrow the right wrench tools, makes it about 500 times easier......

Thanks, it IS written on the fan shroud. Got the five piece tool set from Advance Auto Parts, it is NOT the right one, I took it back and got the two piece set that says it is for the Ford, 4.9L engine, it IS the right set.

I just removed mine, I bought a 1 7/16 wrench and ground down the sides to make it thinner, then used a hammer on the wrench to loosen the nut . Worked great .

I had to change the plastic fan on mine that was cracked .

Just wondering if you guys that have a cooling problem have a 10 blade or 9 blade fan
Mine came with the 10 blade as std eqpt the parts guy said it was a option for the explorers .

I need to take mine off to change the fan clutch but man, no way is it coming off. I even soaked the nut in pb blaster, and its bent 2 fan removal tools. Time to get dirty with it and show it who the boss is.

Try using a hammer and punch to shock it loose. That should work.

Mike

I've heard of others who use the punch trick , they say it works good but has to be a long punch .

Initially, about the only thing that works is to shock it. Try a sharp rap to the end of the wrench with a mallet. Those things, having reverse threads, tend to spin themselves on tighter as they run. Good thing too, can you envision flying fans everywhere?

I actually did loose mine once (after modifying a pulley under it to drive an on-board air system) and it spun right off the truck. Fortunately (actually, this is about the only way this could happen!) it happend when I shut off the motor and it hiccupped just a bit at the final shut down. I heard this strange sound, and there was my fan laying on the ground under the truck (Ranger 2.9). No damage done, and I "sharply" rapped it back in place.

NAPA sells a handy kit, and it works on more cars than just fords. Consists of 1 thin wrench that fits over fan clucht nut. The 2nd piece is a 18" long "Y" shaped wrech/bracket type thing that hooks onto the H2O pump pulley.

Slipped a LOT at first, but once I figured out how to use it, The clutch came right off. About $40.

The problem with my tool is the thin wrench that fits over the nut keeps rounding the nut off because its just made of cheap pot metal and the spanner that goes over the 4 bolts on the pulley spreads itself out for the same reason.

Thats why I purchased a 1 7/16 wrench and ground it just enough to fit between the bolts for the pully and the clutch . The wrench only cost me about $30.00can .
Thats a lot less than the shop rate around here .

Yeah the wrench I got from Advance was slipping and rounding off the nut also, I realized that someone who had used it previously had spread it out into a Y, I adjusted it with a big copper mallet and they nut came right off, but those wrenches are soft steel.
