Fan shuts down when auto is pressed

I have a 2013 Ford Explorer and the manual setting for the fan and heat works fine. However, when you press the auto button, the fan completely stops (and the temperature inside the vehicle is not the temperature it is set to). Any ideas on what it could be? thanks

The smart ass in me wants to say it's the auto button.

But seriously, I'll assume the auto button is part of a module. If it's shorted at all it'll change the voltage and shut down.
