Rod, the announcement is at 11am et, not 11pm.

It's about time they recalled those p.o.s. tires. Why is it that so many of us knew they were terrible, and it took Bridgestone/Firestone so long to deal with the problem? And in the meantime, people were injured and even killed by the company's failure to act.

I got rid of my Firestone ATX's almost as soon as I bought my Explorer. I knew the were no good even then.

Here is another link on the Firestone recall:

I have some HT's on mine.. and while they are fine.. sounds like a good time to score some free tires. Any idea what they would trade them out for? Hopefully a refund is an option! :)

I hope they give us something good in return...

however, the tires aren't as bad as everyone says - or at least my experience has been pretty good. The fact of the matter is that I have gotten 50k miles out of my ATX's and they still have significant tread. I believe that the tires were originally rated at 40k miles. The whole thing is that I have gotten far more than expect out of them - EVEN THOUGH they have been cracking at the tread for the last 10k miles. But I am changing them as soon as I get back home (holding onto the old ones for my recall) b/c you can't expect the tire to run forever.

I have to agree on my firestones.. the ride blows... but they work... and i drive like and idiot... if anything they have kept my butt outta getting killed a few times. :) hehe. I have driven on worse. I still want my BFG's... although more and more I think i want the long trails or whatever.. those KO's seem like too rough a ride for a city boy like me.

New to this forum, but for FlyGuy who said he has HT's on his Explorer... please be careful..

My husband had HT's with 10 thousand miles on them, when I took the truck in for a check, rotate, and balance... turns out that two of the four tires were separating... Firestone tried to hide this by putting four brand new AT's on my husbands truck without telling us of the tire switch... I knew it right away... I also over heard management talking about the tire separation in the HT's... but I am still waiting for them to tell me directly.

I hope they work out for you...

I now want those AT's off the truck... in fact, I never wanted them to put them on to begin with.

Welcome!

Hi Keely95EddieBauer,
Welcome to the best Explorer site on the Internet. :D
I hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us do. I would get rid of those things as soon as possible.
Nick,
Take the lady's advice and BE CAREFUL! I want to be able to meet you all in one piece someday. :D

Thank you for your welcome Ray.

I was told I could trade these tires in, I would have to pay 40.00 per tire for a cheap trade in... it was listed on the paper work that the AT's were worth 60.00 .. it is really weird how they did all this... but right now, there is all of 20 miles on those tires, I feel they should replace them free of charge considering I did not want them in the first place.

I bet I will have to get my attorney called in on this before I see action.

I really dont believe that the tire problem is as severe as they make it out to be on the news.. considering the amount that are out there to the amount that seperate... Im sure it happens more than others though.. anyways..my HT's are holding up perty good. no signs of wear at all. I do plan on replacing though. okay.. whats this about having to pay 40 bucks to get 60 credit? huh? I confused. If I read that right.. 20 bucks per tire is not a very good deal. anyways... lets see... any input on the bridgestones?

nick

By the way... thats funny about them changing the tires... hehe... they think they are all smooth... they could have at least tried it with HT's....

nick

I believe you get $40 credit for each tire.

I read the reports and they said they'd mostly be replacing them in the southern states where it has hot temps. Reckon Indiana could be classified as a southern state?..........

Well, I just watched the tail end of a press conference held by Firestone on CNBC. They cut out early so I didn't hear any good details such as how much credit and what you can swap for. CNN has this article for today on their website: http://cnnfn.cnn.com/2000/08/09/news/firestone_recall/

I am hoping to swap for some Deuler AT's 265/75R16. Probably have to pay a little extra. Sounds like they will fit with some minor fendor trimming.(I have no lift) I had the Bridgestone Deuler MT's on my toyota pickup before I went to the AT's when they wore out. I got about 50K+ miles on the MT's. They were good in the dirt but sucked in the snow/ice, no traction. I went to the AT's next, and they were much quiter, which I was hoping for. I sold the truck after 10k more miles, and got my explorer. I bet the AT's would have gone 50K also, and they were decent in the snow/ice.

Go here for info on the Duelers: http://www.bridgestone-usa.com/products/DATD691t.htm
and
http://www.bridgestone-usa.com/products/BSD-AT.htm

website is super slow right now, as you can imagine.

I would have to pay 40.00 for each tire to replace the ones on there... I hope that they come up with something better considering these tires have less than 20 miles on them... my husband drove to work this morning ;)
40.00 does not seem bad, except it adds up with four tires, and since these are so new... I figure a straight across would be more ideal.

I am in Kansas, I dont know how hot or "southern" they think we are... but it is pretty common to get 100 + degree heat here.

Firestone is recalling the 235/75R-15 and will exchange to new tires free of charge. Obviously the new ones will be Firestone/Bridgestone tires.
I just got back form America's Tire Co. (same as Discount Tire Co, but not Discount Tire Centers). They will exchange my 255/70R-16 AT's and give me $60/tire credit on the AT's. My At's have 16K miles on them with 2/3 of the tread left.
By the way, I'm getting Pirelli Scorpions. They have a pretty aggressive tread and are costing me $42/tire after the exchange.

Well, pays to live in GA. Just got word from my dad that we're on a waiting list to get new tires for our 2000 Sport. Will let you all know what they're replaced with.

Hey... on that CNN site or whateever... they said my HT's are not being recalled... just the AT's

looks can be deceiving...

I think the Bridgestone HT's or Duelers or whatever they're called are not part of the recall. Only Firestone Wilderness AT, ATX, ATX II.

It seems like all of the problems with Firestones occur when it is hot temp and people have 40 or 50000+ miles on the tires. The fooling part about a Firestone AT/ATX tire is that it can LOOK great (lots of tread) at 40 or 50 thousand miles, but inside the tire is well past its design life.
