Has anyone done this and have any comments?

I am about to venture into fitting my own towbar and would like some advice/hints. I think the explorer has a pre wired loom under the rear bumper but have not checked to see if this is true yet. Is it a more or less simple job or does it require welding gear

Thanks

Phil

Think I have it sussed' it looks like they attach to the chassis at the bumper mountings and are a load of bolts through to the original bolt holes.

Yep job done. I got a whitter bar. The bolts use the standard bumper bracket mounts plus the extra plates inside the chassis. I ignored the pre-wired connection and went straight behind the nearside rear light to tap off the required connections. They are all there including the right hand indicator, just used a test light to identify the correct cables.

its only an extra £15 so i might as well get the connector and just plug it in save some time i hope. Do you know if the computer needs updating Howard to tell it its now got towing connectors

Not sure if the connector has all the wires that you need or meets EEC regulations. Thats why I just wired it up directly with the repeater relay and buzzer. But who knows whether the connector even works in the UK models. You do not need to re-programme the computer for the trailer wiring.
