I'm thinking of making some 3 or 4" flares for my Explorer out of body tin. My question is, should I cut the fenders out where the flares will go or just weld'em onto the fender the way it is? I thought it would be better to remove the material that will be under the new flares. Any suggestions?

whats the purpose? Looks or tire clearance?
(street or off road)

One more

Well, you got two of the three. I also am thinking of keeping the tires "under the fenders" for legality. I don't want to stand and argue with someone about they stick out too far.

I think he is going solid..?

I was just asking because ifits for tire clearance then I say cut off whats behind the new flare..

If its cosmetic, then I still say cut it off, or even use it as the base for your new flare....

VW guys lfare the rear 1/4" of their GTI's and Jetta's for a wide body look, cutting notchesin the existing metal, bending it out in tabs, and then filling in and shaping...

Ridin' up

I'd like to try and keep the same basic position of the wheel well so I thought I'd move the top of the flare up the body a couple of inches and pull the fender lip out . Kinda like giving the fenders and quarters a fat lip.
