any codes?

sounds like an issue with your control trac "torque on demand" transfer case

There are two speed sensors inside that case and when one goes bad you can get the flashing light
6 times points to an issue with a speed sensor
You have a BW 4405 TOD transfer case
It is a good idea to do a visual inspection of the transfer case itself, the wiring on the back of it, the front driveshaft condition and then a really good idea is to drain the fluid and collect it in a clean pan. Is it red or brown? Does it smell burnt? ANY BITS OF NYLON in the fluid? White plastics pieces?

Your t case could need a simpole wiring repair, or a new sensor........worst case it could need a rebuild or replacement

How many miles?

If you can get the live data, compare the front and rear shaft speeds. This can confirm what 410fortune posted. There are other tests for the sensor, it's just a Hall Effect switch, so it can be tested with a multimeter and a piece of ferrous metal. That could require removal of the sensor, but you can alternatively raise the vehicle and back-probe.
As posted above, check the wiring & connector.
Draining the fluid is also sound advice. If in fact it is a sensor fault, as a last resort cleaning the metallic sludge may help.
But now you can see the advantages of just hooking a good scantool up and pulling the specific code & live data.

yes the 4x4 lights will blink if the speeds are different eg different gears etc iirc?

if the speeds are different from what the computer expects to see
Or if no speed is detected from one of the speed sensors

It's the speed sensor, probably the front one. Pull it out and clean it. Fine metal from wear can build up on it and interfere. You should have a stored error code like P1836.
Here's the thread from when I had problems with mine. P1836 Transfer case Speed Sensor
Part numbers in there too. Easy fix.
