Hi everyone!
Thanks for all of the posts and advice in this forum!
Ok, I have a 2001 Explorer XLT, 4.0 SOHC V6, 2WD A/T. It has been great with almost no maintenance or wear issues for 167,000 miles. Then one day it would not start.
It ran fine one night, then would not start the next day [so no codes were set while it ran on one day the day before, I guess.]
After some investigation I have found the following.
It will not start apparently b/c it is flooding.
It cranks strong, so battery, starter & ignition all work well.
It has spark at the plugs,
It has good compression,
The timing is correct.
The plugs were wet when I pulled them
It seems to be flooding itself when I crank it.
There is a strong smell of fuel when it is cranked even for a few seconds and there was liquid gas at the throttle body hose connection.
Would it set a code just from being cranked the next day when it would not start, or does it need to run for some time period before it will set a code?
What can cause it to flood like this?
Can the Fuel Pressure Regulator do this with no other problem?
Any suggestions, hints, clues or recommendations will be much appreciated!
