I need personal opinions. (err, I may have opened the door wide there. )

I have one last mod before I reprogram the computer by James.

In the next few days I'm redoing the exaust, and need to know which catbacks would be the better choice? Magnaflow or Flowmaster 50?

I am currently running a 4.0L OHV, w/ K&N Intake, underdrive pulley

If im not mistaken the general consensus is that flowmasters sound better on the 4.0s, but thats based only off of what i read

I like magnaflow (deep and smooth) better than flowmaster (deep, hollow and loud).

Any specific model? as they don't list one specific of the explorer?

This is the one I had.

But I'd try to get this one.

Irun a magnaflow on the focus with a magnaflow high flow cat, and for what its worth i love the sound on that, it is definately deeper and smoother than some of the other options

hmmm, something to think about.

I notice that Magnaflow doesnt make a catback system, so I guess I'd have to consider a custom install.

The flowmaster 50 kit is not avaliable here either for about a week at the earliest.

So I have some time to read up on both still.

Custom install is the way to go. Just drive to the local muffler shop and tell them what muffler and size pipe you want, and they'll do it.

You can tell them what you're looking for in a muffler, and see what they have to say too.

i like flowmasters

We'll looks like Magaflow has better looking models, so I'm leaning that way.

I talked to a custom shop today, they say the muffler/tailpipe, etc. Installed all together with 2.5" pipes will be around $425 can, not a bad deal I think.

A flowmaster catback system is $320 +installation.

That's also including a new cat, don't know if that would make much of a difference though.

I have the 4.0 SOHC and I've been looking into a new exhaust. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with some type of Magnaflow setup.

Between the two, Ill go for the flowmaster personally...but they get loud

what is the stock exhaust piping for a 98' explorer 4.0 sohc, in and out? I want to get the muffler froader suggested, but then again it doesn't come with the whole cat back kit like flowmaster sells. Of couse I could have it made custom at the shop and just give them the muffler, but being that i can weld and have easy access to a welder I'd rather have all the piping and put it together myself.

I guess what I'm asking is, is there anyway i can get 2.5 piping for my X without having to buy a whole kit? Im so tempted to buy the flowmaster kit since its all there and ready to go, but I really don't want flowmaster.

The stock muffler is dual 2" in/single 2.25" out to the rear.

To get 2.5" piping, you will need to get yourself a Y pipe. When I was running all stock piping, I used the following Y pipe

http://www.performance-curve.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=169

Reason it's dual 2.25" in/ single 2.5" out is when you cut the pipes before the muffler and install the Y pipe, one of the pipe is going to go in the Y pipe at an angle so you need that .25" of slack. A few good beads of weld will seal it right up. Once you get this installed, get yourself a single offset in/single center out muffler and youll have 2.5" piping. Good luck!

FYI, if your going magnaflow, here's an example of the type of in/out setup youll need if you do the magnaflow Y pipe install as mentioned above

Out of curiosity, what does everyone think about dynomax as far as performance goes? What about the tone of a dynomax muffler? So far I'm still leaning towards magnaflow, because I can't be waking my family every night i come home late with a flowmaster, but I still want a nice deep, full toned sound which is what magnaflow seems to be.
