I don't have the V8, but I felt the need to contribute...

I haven't done a whole lot of highway driving since I got my 50 SUV put on over the summer. I just brought my car back to school with me last weekend, and I took a trip up to my gf's college just yesterday. When you have the stereo cranked, it's not so bad- but driving up yesterday listening to O&A, it sounded like a small plane was trying to lift off when I hit 75 MPH! I love it around town, but on the highway, it makes me wish I had bigger tires or lower (numerically) gears or SOMETHING, cuz cruising speed puts it in the RPM range where it seems to resonate the most. However, if you are the kind of person who always drives 55, you might be okay.

i have a 40 non delta and have had it for like 6 months... like 4 months hacked with no exit.... i still notice the drone at 85 mph but it really doesnt bother me... but sometimes it does make my headaches worse.... you get used to it after awhile....

Spectre, actually i very rarely drive 55 on the expressway, but when I am doing 75 or so I usually have the radio cranked so its no problem.

I've decided to go ahead and put it on and get over it. I figure the little bit of interior noise will be worth the overall sound.

Ok, I got it put on today and it's very quiet! I decided to leave the stock resonater on at first to make sure it wasn't going to be too loud but now I'm dissapointed that I did. It's not loud at all. You can barely even hear it. All I had the muffler shop do was cut off the stock muffler and weld the flowmaster in its place so its going through a resonater and 2.25" tail pipes. When I go home next weekend I'm going to cut off the tail pipe and put a turn down on the muffler and try that. If thats too loud or puts exhaust in the cab then I'll go somewhere and have them mandrel bend a 2.5" tailpipe and put it on. I'm sure the 4 cats don't help either. I might try to find a shop that will hollow out the last two since their aren't any emissions tests in my county.

Just for everyone's info, don't expect loud if you just replace your muffler and leave evrything else the same.

CougarX,

I had everything after the cats replaced when I got mine installed. It's not loud at all at idle, which is unfortunate. I drove home from school today, and I discovered that at about 85, the drone isn't so bad anymore. :)

On a kind of side note, I have heard that the length of the exhaust pipe has an impact on where in the RPM range the resonance occurs. I think the shorter it is, the higher in the RPM range, but I am not certain. Anybody know anything about this? If that's the case, I'd be willing to cut the pipe off before the axle. I'd trade a little more volume to get rid of that annoying resonance.

5.0... go true duals!

I know the thread is old but thought I would give my opinion... man, with a 302 ci engine, you cannot justify having a single exhaust. That was the first mod I made to mine being a mustang person. It sounds good and although the left one is a little longer than the right, I am happy with the sound as there is really no way to avoid that...

Showing my A$$...

Show you duals baby...

but wait... there is a downfall... as always DON'T SHUT THE CAR OFF IN THE WATER or else you'll have DUAL STRAWS!

lowdpypes... i am getting dual exhaust and have been thinking for weeks about how i want the pipes to exit. today i saw yours and i made up my mind. that looks so sweet. the shop where im gonna get mine done has chrome tips but i think they are a little bigger than yours. what size tips are those. (diameter and length) thanks.

VROOM!

they are 3" tips and 15" long... if you go any larger, it really will not look right and if you go any longer then they will have to angle down more. I reccommend putthing the WAR153 shackles on before you do it though cause you will risk "squishing" the driver side pipe. Enjoy and if you need picks, check my page out in my signature. Good Luck!

thanks. im not gonna lift my X. if anything i will lower it down the road. the drivers side pips is going to be run a little different than yours so i wont have to worry about squishing it. thanks for the info.

flowmaster

cougarX, I just had a 50 delta installed on my 4.0L, 2 1/2 single in single out from cat all way out and sounds great! You can definately hear it on inside and out, but its not overpowering. Didnt have the balls to go with 40 series, I guess im getting too old!
