Fog Lamp Mod 2001 (1999-2001?) Explorer

I thought lows stayed on which made having high beams and fogs on illegal? Can't have more than four lights on in the front or something like that. Might of been on page 2 or 3 I read it

This is the light set up on both of my '97 Australian delivered Xs.

Both have H4 halogen hi lo stock, Limited now has bi xenon hi lo HID in H4 pattern
Fog lights only come on with high beam, no switch to turn them off, always on with high beam.
I thought that was to fill in the space under the high beam, it's certainly no good for fog.
I only drive the Limited now and the HIDs are fantastic in fog so I never need the fog lights anyway. I'll be disconnecting them 'cause the pattern is terrible.
If I can find long range halogen spots to go in the fog holes I'll do that.

In the past when I did have fog lights on other cars I wired them so they could come on just with parkers or switchable with high beam.

Re: Fog Lamp mod for 1999 - 2001 Explorer

Fog Lamp Mod 2001 (1999-2001?) Explorer

After some exploration, I’ve figured out how to modify the foglamp circuit for a 2001 Explorer so that the foglamps stay on with the high beams. This mod is actually much easier, IMHO, than for the earlier models.

First, I located the relay box. It’s mounted to the same plate that holds the bottom of the airbox. I got into it, and here’s what I found:

1. There are sockets for a total of six relays, two large (the size of a conventional Bosch relay) and four smaller relays, in a 1 2 1 2 configuration. The six sockets were arranged like this, with socket 1 being toward the front of the vehicle:

1
2 3
4
5 6

On my Explorer, socket 1 was empty from the factory.

2. The small type relays in sockets 2 and 3 control the foglamps. Why two relays? One to turn on the foglamps when the parking lamps go on, the second to turn off the foglamps when the high beams come on.

3. By checking the wiring on the back of the relay sockets, I came to the conclusion that relay 2 as shown above turned off the foglamps. Why? It was wired so that power flowed when the relay was _NOT_ energized.

Did this quick and easy mod tonight on my 2000 Limited. Thanks guys, I always hated how the fogs turned off with high beams!

Just did the clipped pin deal on my 2000, works like a charm! took about 3 minutes:)

Thanks!!! to edlmann and aldive for putting all the real energy into figuring that all out .

BTW: just changed 1 dead PIAA superwhite headlamp bulb out for a Silverstar, bought a pair but will wait for the other PIAA to burnout...shouldn't be that long  I've been through 2 full sets now in about 15000mi. I do run with them on all the time. They sure don't last like the old fashioned stuff. I look forward to seeing (no pun) how the Sylvania's work out.

Thanks again guys!

So how long did those silverstars last? I just installed 4 yesterday :D

This mod was one of the 1st things I did on my Ex.
