On top of the bumper is the usual place if you don't want to buy a safari bar or light bar.

I saw an explorer like mine and yours with fog lights cut into the front air dam (black plastic thing hanging down on the bottom of the front bumper). He cut perfect holes, put foglights in there so it looks like it came that way from factory. Not the best if you do alot of offroading or plowing through deep snow(reason why I haven't done it yet). I would imagine they would get busted pretty quickly, but it looks really cool.

Just a thought. You may have to make some kind of bracket to make it a little more solid, so the plastic is not the only thing supporting it.

I wanna do the fogs too! I have seen a lot on the grill, those look cool. Is there a particular way to mount it, or is each pair of lights different.

thanks BlueOvalFan, but what brand do you suggest? Is the set from wal-mart good? Or do you know of any others? BTW, the pair at wal-mart are only $20.

Thanks

I was able to mount two fog lights inside the little wholes in the bumper. I made a piece that I put onto the little plastic to protect the engine parts and screwed the lights into there. Worked great. Hardest part was running the wires. :) Check out Mdrut's truck......he's done the same things

jzsurf,

Personally, if I put on fog/driving lights it will be more for looks than for more light. I upgraded to super white headlights and, therefore, I get all the light I need, for my needs(I strongly recommend upgrading to a whiter, brighter headlight, they are only a couple dollars extra, and are worth it). I can see real far ahead and well into the ditch as well, which is important for seeing deer, etc. So, for me, the WalMart cheapos would do just fine. Personally I don't like the real small blueish ones, if I am going to mount em, I want to see em! But, get whatever you like as far as looks. It is all about what turns your crank! What I like may not be what you like.

Have fun.

BlueOvalFan, I have a '92.

What are the superwhites you bought and recommend? Can you give me a name (model) and price? Thanks a lot.

Matt

FitzMatt,

Sorry man, I can't remember the brand...Phillips possibly. Just went to WalMart, they have the Original replacement ones, then they have some that say something like "150% brighter, whiter light." I initially thought it may just be a gimmicky sales pitch, but bought them because they were only $3 or $4 more (about $12-15Cdn, probably about $10US). I had one burned out on my Ex, figured I'd replace them both. Really glad I did. We have alot of deer here in Saskatchewan and when going to my parents farm, we see some almost every time, need good lights to see/avoid them.

I also adjust my lights as high as I can, until I start to get "flashed" when meeting cars, then lower them just a touch. I can easily see beyond my braking distance.

By the way, these lights are not like the really cool blueish ones like you see on expensive luxury cars, they are REALLY expensive. These are, however better than OE lights.

Hope this helps. Later.

The headlights each have just one bulb in them, so did the new bulb you replaced have hi and lo too? Are they both brighter?

Yeah, it is the same part number, I think 9004 or something, but the brighter one is 9004HD (high density) or something like that. Sorry, I am at work right now, can't check.

Yes, they are all brighter - driving light, dim, bright. Whiter too. Not that yellowy kind of OE light. Looks good, improves visibility, worth the extra few bucks IMHO.

thanks for all your help, i'm going to try the replacement headlight first.

I don't do any off roading, so i was pretty much going for just looks, however, i was thinking about getting a safari rack and putting like five or six bright lights on it, so i can park my Ford on a dune for some early morning surfing. is this a good idea? how expensive or difficult would it be?

thanks again

If you want a safari rack and 6 lights, yes, it will get pretty costly. But if that is what it will take to suit your needs, go for it. Some of the things done on this website are pretty wild, but there was a problem that someone was faced with, and they came up with a solution to suit their needs. So if you need lotsa offroad lights for your driving style or lifestyle, go for it!

Pricewise...if you go with a namebrand light like a PIAA, they can get REALLY expensive, on the other hand, WalMart or a parts store may have a cheaper knockoff. I, personally do not spend $100 on a pair of jeans because of the namebrand, and would not spend $200 on a pair of lights either...but this is just me.

BlueOvalFan, thank for your help. PIAA'S are expensive, how the hell does that one dude, the guy with the X and the F-150 have all of those PIAA's? I'm not knockin him, both of his trucks are really cool.

Yeah, Matt has a lot of lights!!! But I guess he had a need for lights (either to see or be seen), so he did it. And it looks great, in my opinion.

How does he do it? I am guessing he has worked hard, has a good job and has earned it.
Therefore spending that kind of money on PIAAs doesn't seem crazy to him.

It is all about making your Explorer suit your needs. There is everything on this website...some might say mounting a fishing rod holder on the bumper is a little wierd, but there was a need and a solution.

Peace.

hey look at me, I'm famous... people talk about me when I'm not paying attention, LOL.
Seriously, it's like I told the guys in Attica who were asking why they should spend that much more on lights... it's like a winch. If you never use it, then why buy top of the line? You can get away with buying a cheaper with one with less warranty, not quite the same reputation, and not the same quality for half or sometimes even less then the top of the line Warn brand. yet Warn sells more winches then anyone. PIAA sells more lights then anyone (well, of the top lighting companies anyways) and if you use the lights a ton, you'll want something that isn't going to crap out on you, or get water in it, or fry your switch, or provide insufficient lights. Heck ya I got a lot of lights :).

God don't you guys think ALL those lights are excessive! Man, I'd hate to cut one of you guys off :)
