ford 4.0 trans failure? AA wants comments

Put my name in the hat for AA. I contacted them when the 2nd one went out, but (as we all know) they didn't have anything to fit.

I have replaced my POS 5 spd 3 times so far. :shoot:

My '92 Navajo has 231,000 miles on it, but I think the tranny should last longer, if its taken care of. 1 good thing is that the transmissions are rather inexpensive ($1200 for the last one). But just in case I need to do it again, I held onto the last one so I can get it rebuilt.

$1200 for a rebuild or a new one?

I had a "special" part number for a Mazda tranny and if you went to the Mazda dealer with that number they would sell you a new tranny for $1200. If you just went and asked Mazda or Ford for a tranny for a '9x Explorer or Navajo they would tell you the price was over 2k!

I tried that "special" number again recently for a friend and it didn't work! They must have "fixed" the computer because even with that number the price was over 2k.

Dang rick, sounds like you were getting a bargain!

oh well, least it gives a guy time to save his pennies. BTW thanks for the update.

It was a brand spank'n new! I bought it from Al Smith Mazda in Raleigh (NC) 3 years ago. I looked up the invoice (I really have it) and its for $1208.66 + tax, part #P511-03-000.

I checked with a Ford dealer there and as I remembr the price was around $1500.

Of course I could have bought a rebuilt one for $1300!

i paid $1200 for a rebuilt A4ld. i was quoted $1800 for just the tranny from ford. this was a little over a month ago here in north florida.

I paid $1200 for a a4ld and the rebuilt torque converter came apart 13k later. I understand the 700r4 will cost twice that when they die.

Here's my vote for an AOD conversion...I think my POS A4LD is going.....going....going......you know what's next:rolleyes: An AOD would be great!

You can get a rebuilt and modified 700R4 from Jet for $1800 and they do numerous mods.

Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but I'm gonna ask anyway...What does a 700R4 tranny come out of? Is it as strong as an AOD?
Thanks!

Comes out of a Corvette... That should answer your other question :D

Ok, I just did a search on that 700R4. It's a cheby tranny?! Yuck, that's about as bad as putting a 350 in a 32 ford street rod. No way jose, I'll take an AOD or I'll keep my POS A4LD. LOL

I've got the 5 speed and it was replaced along with the tcase at 18000 mi after a loud grinding noise. I'm not that impressed with the new one either, sometimes it grinds downshifting into 3rd.

I Paid 2500 to have my auto rebuilt. They did it at Cottman Trans. The guy said the way they rebuilt it,
it should outlast the engine. 500 of it was just for the electronics. Did I get ripped off that bad?(well actually I paid 50 for the warranty deductible and about 400 for electronic parts they didn't cover.

I just had my trans serviced by my mechanic a few weeks ago. Dark and smelly was the fluid. Shifts are week and previously in the morning the first shift of the day would hang up. After the first shift, it would be OK. After it was serviced, it is shifting OK.

He said it getting very close to needing the trans replaced. The truck has 171,000+ miles. I bought it at 113,000+ in late '99.

I am unhappy with the motor and trans. The motor can be fixed by building one and adding a blower (which is what I'm thinking about this summer/fall). I really don't want to have to use the same wimpy trans and would like to get that fixed first.

As soon as AA has a kit for an AOD, I am there! Rick, please keep the talks with AA going. They have a customer here in the very near future if they can get it done before mine gets replaced.

The good thing is that I can get a rebuilt one for cost and my mechanic friend can install it for me for 0 cost. I'd rather pay AA for a better trans then get the same old one that won't last.

Does anyone know about the AXOD
I hear it is a 4 speed auto that is electronically shifted.
What is electronically shifted?
What is the A4LD beside a piece of crap.

I am wondering because I got a 86 Lincoln Towncar 5.0 and it came with the trany that is the AXOD. I want to do the conversion using that setup if possible.

Any suggestions.

I sent AA a similar e-mail and await a response.
There are some savy Explorer minds on this site so I poise the question here.

Tranny adapter

My original tranny is still ok but, I’m interesting about some info from AA.
I don’t know what is the best alternative for a transmission replace but every strong 5 speed manual that fits to the Atlas will be ok.
I will stay tuned.

Please help. I was out wheeling and had a terriable time by the time it was over. I am the second owner of this vehicle so I am not sure how many miles or on this trans. I am sure of 50k. Take a look at what happened.

Dead Link Removed

An adapter to put a AOD would be great. It is a very strong trans and there are many upgrades to make it stronger and reliable.

Thanks

Eric

The tranny's explorers come with are junk! I am on my second one in less that a year and it is acting up and wants to crap out! Anything has to be better than an A4LD.

all i have to say i that i was in the middle of a 5 mile trail, and my tranny locked up. Had to take out the driveshafts so i could be pulled/winched 3 miles through obstacles and then trailered home where it has been sitting for three weeks now, waiting for another transmission...
i'm a prospective customer
